Okay, so I said I never got to finish all the cliches in the world. Now, I'm going to go onto another one. One of my least favorites took a whole page to explain, so in this one, I'm going to try to sum it up. Now, let me tell everyone something that almost nobody understands:
YOUR BOOK IS NOT A HISTORICAL FICTION BOOK IF ALL IT TALKS ABOUT IS FLOWERS AND HORSES AND ALL THAT MESSED UP STUFF.
I know this seems a bit cliche, but it needs to be said! All these historical fiction novels talk about flowers and horses and all that. GUESS WHAT? It's NOT historical, because in present day, WE STILL HAVE THESE THINGS! Your book does NOT have the best plot in the world if all it focuses on is that stupid horse you keep talking about. That being said, if the horse sprouted wings and a horn and became a unicorn, it's still not historical fiction. Then it's a FANTASY.
Your book ISN'T a historical fiction novel if you make up some language and all the characters dress like pilgrims. What. The. Heck. Basically, you are telling me if I make up some random language and dress like somebody from the 1700s, I am now a historical person and should be treated as such. Is that true? NO!
You know what else I don't want to here? All these historical fiction novels about romance. There are some good ones out there (probably), but I don't want to here about that knight you have been waiting to come and rescue you. Unless he somehow betrays you and the dragon that is keeping you hostage turns out to be the real prince or something, get real. Do you really think that because you have been captured, that therefore states that he is now entitled to be your beloved for all of eternity? NO. You know what I DO want to see? A book about vikings or ancient romans or something. That way, it's ORIGINAL, and I don't have to read books that all focus on that person who rides a horse and skips through fields of flowers to find her true love.
Basically, we really need to think. Is everything historical focusing on pilgrims and their adventure to the new world, or about that girl who goes to a glamourous ball like Cinderella and finds some dude she ends up loving? No! There are SO many other things people could write about! When you think of history, what do you think about? I THINK about those wars we used to have, ancient civilizations like the Aztec and Inca, vikings, stuff like that! THOSE are the interesting topics! Things that nobody bothers to write about AT ALL, and that really sucks.
Lesson learned, don't write your historical fiction novel about a king or queen, or a knight who comes to save the princess from an evil dragon. Why? IT IS NOT ORIGINAL!!!! Use some of the ideas I just listed, or better yet, come up with your own. Type in something on google and find something new nobody has written yet.
FIX THIS HISTORICAL FICTION PROBLEM.
