"Are you ready for the auction, Ariana?"
I met eyes with my father, his smile so innocent, but his eyes told another story.
I shrugged, racing my fingers down my waist, flattening down the satin of my dress. "As ready as I'm going to be, I guess." A small chuckle escaped my father and I's lips, I came closer to him, adjusting his tie.
"Miranda! are you almost ready darling?" My father called up toward the stairs, I sighed softly turning away from him.
I looked at myself in the mirror, adjusting my footing slightly, a clicking noise emitting down our hallway.
I looked up at the staircase, Miranda slowly made her way down, careful as to not trip.
"Don't you two look absolutely wonderful?" My father outreached his hand, placing it softly on Miranda's hip. I looked down at the floor at her heels. "You're wearing the same ones as I am."
My eyes rushed up to meet Miranda's. "Your father bought us matching pairs." She smiled and cocked her head, clicking past me.
"Thanks, I guess. Dad." My eyes meeting his. Why must she and I have the same of everything?
"I can't just dress one of my ladies in Louboutin can I?" He gave me the cheesiest smile, holding my arm and leading me outside where our limousine was waiting.
I have to admit, I am excited about the auction but... I should be studying. I should be studying a lot more than I am. It's not easy being the prodigy daughter of a brilliant surgeon, let alone him owning fifty percent of the leading medical insurance company in Toronto but, I guess I should be grateful.
Grateful that I have such a life, where I have the world in the palm of my hands, a free ride to medical school in my back pocket.
Yet there's more that I want.
Freedom perhaps?
A mother instead of a girl that is only a year older than me?
One can hope.
Justin
I stood looking at myself in the mirror, adjusting my tie.
Tonight is the auction, the first night I will be participating I should say.
I ran my hand through my hair, checking any angle I could for imperfections. Taking a cigarette out of my back pocket, I lit it and stood there, letting the smoke consume my lungs.
My gaze was interrupted by a ringing, I took my cellphone out of my back pocket. Joshua.
"Hello? What do you want now?" I seethed through my teeth, how many times does one man have to call.
"I was wondering if you were going to be coming into the office tomorrow, we have the meeting at noon wit-"
"Yes, yes yes I'll be there. Fuck Joshua, there are three other partners you know? I don't have to be at every meeting." I hung up the phone, making my way down my staircase and into my limousine.
Ariana
We arrived at the hall, allowing my father to take my hand as I stepped out of the limo.
"Remember, you do not have to talk to the media if you do not want to, just go ahead inside I'll meet you at our table." My father placed a reassuring pat on my back, with a slight push.
I sighed, "Yes."
How many times does this man want to go over this gala with me? I laughed to myself, allowing my face to be illuminated with the flashing cameras.
