*crunch . . . crunch. . . SNAP* What could it possibly be now, I think, my ears trained on the sound outside my house as I lay in bed staring into vast nothingness. I hear the slow steps start again; probably thinking I hadn’t heard anything not realizing that I scented them here right away. I slowly get out of bed and silently pad outside to see who my unwelcome visitor is.

Standing in the exact spot my bed is on the opposite side of the wall is a minor fox demon. I menacingly smile at how dumb they are to not have scented me yet. I smoothly walk up behind him and take him down with a single round house kick to his head. “Stupid half-breed,” I spit looking at him lying in a pool of his own blood. I dust my hands off as my ears perk up hearing a faint rustle to my right. I slowly swivel my head around, scanning the area, as a small growl slips out of my mouth. I hear a faint whimper and stop my eyes zeroing in on where the noise came from. I quickly and quietly move over to the tree and look around it to see a young girl no more than 6 cowering, her back pressed firmly in the trunk. “Oh darling,” I murmur making her yelp and scurry away. “No, no, no darling. I’m not going to hurt you, I promise,” I coo at her spreading my arms wide to show I mean no harm. She hesitates a second before throwing herself in my arms and whimpering, “My mommy. I lost my mommy.”

“Hush, hush darling. Everything is going to be fine. Now, why don’t you run along inside and I will be in, in just a moment,” I soothingly say, running my hand down her hair. She stiffens and slowly nods her head before scampering inside. “What a cutie,” I mumble. “But you on the other hand probably are not. So why don’t you show your ugly mug,” I shout scenting a far more powerful demon still hidden. Maybe it wasn’t a wasted effort coming out after all, I think to myself as the demon’s scent gets stronger. “Hmph, pathetic chi. . ,” I start as I am violently thrown backwards into a tree my head making a meaty thud before limply falling forward. “It would appear that you are the pathetic one,” I hear a cold voice sneer. A slow smirk spreads across my face as I growl, “And you must be the stupidest demon in existence to not realize who you are talking to.” He snarls, picks me up by the throat and slams me into another tree. My head once more cracking backwards before falling forwards. He holds onto my neck and leans close to hiss in my ear, “And what are you if not the same thing?”

My ears press flat to my skull as my tail whips back and forth. “I am the best demon hunter there is,” I respond, lifting my head to revel glowing violet eyes and gleaming fangs bared and ready to strike. “So you’re the she-demon everyone has been talking about.”

“So you do know about me, I’m touched. So then you must also know that you are treading on some very precarious ground right now and need to back the hell off before you lose something precious, like say, your head,” I purr, venom dripping form every word. “And it would be a shame to bloody that pretty silver hair of yours now wouldn’t it?”

“Indeed it would but you shan’t get the chance to even try she-demon,” He snaps narrowing his golden eyes. “Killing off your own kind as if they were nothing more than human scum. You are the real pathetic one half-breed,” He superiorly sniffs, gripping my neck tighter so all I can get is the merest trickle of oxygen and making me wince. “The only ones I kill are thieves and murders which pretty much is all of you,” I spit struggling against the blackness at the edge of my vision due to lack of oxygen. “Tsk, we do what we must to survive.”

“No, you do what you want for fun, nothing else. So take your filthy claws off me before I’m forced to remove them completely.”

“Now, now girl. That’s no way to treat a superior is it? Seems I will have to teach you a lesson,” He growls a malicious glint in his eyes, as his claws start to faintly glow green and my neck starts to burn. Poison, I think as small flames appear on my fingertips. I pull my hand back and fling it at his exposed back. Five arcs of fire leave my fingertips and sear open the flesh of his back. Momentarily caught off guard his grip on my neck loosens and I dodge under his arm. “You little bitch,” he hisses, his eyes gone red. “Now the fight begins,” I growl back both my hands catching fire. “La-lady. I’m sc-scared,” I hear a small voice whimper.

I whirl around, my hands going out and rush towards the house where the little girl was hiding. I dart inside and scoop her up, grabbing a cloak and my pendant before exiting through the back. “Hold on darling,” I coo, throwing the cloak around us as she wraps her arms around my neck and tucks her head down. Fly, I think and a cloud appears at my feet swiftly lifting us up. “Until next time half-breed. I have more pressing matters to deal with than the likes of you,” I call to the demon as he glares up at me. “Sesshomaru, “I hear someone call and see a toad demon enter the clearing and gold eyes coldly look at him. “Till next time golden eyed Sesshomaru,” I murmur as the tree tops cover him from view.
