As Ava sprinted, she saw a sports car stopped near the lights. Lena lay on the ground, unmoving.
The driver stepped out of the car. Ava had no words as she watched Jake moving to the front of the car.
"Lena!" Ava screamed as she ran to her side.
"It was an accident!" Jake said. "She just stepped out in front..."
Ignoring him, Ava screamed," Help! Someone help us! Call for an ambulance!"
She took out her phone, but struggled to dial. The tears in her eyes obscuring her vision.
After what felt like an eternity, the sounds of sirens could be heard approaching.
"Don't worry, baby. It's going to be ok. You're going to be ok!" Ava wept, trying to comfort herself more than anything.
The ambulance officers appeared and checked Lena's vitals. She was then quickly loaded into the waiting ambulance. Without asking, Ava climbed into the back of the amblance, "I'm her girlfriend, I'm coming too."
The ambulance officers just nodded as the sirens started up again.
As Lena was rushed into surgery, she could she the lights of the hospital ceiling rushing past, and her the voice of Ava crying out to her.
"I love you, Lena. You will be alright. They'll take good care of you..."
Her voice growing fainter as she passed through the emergency room doors.
Ava stood there, looking at the closed doors. She wasn't sure how long she had stood there, but she eventually heard the sound of footsteps quickly approaching. It was Elana and Maya.
"What happened," cried Maya, tugging on Ava's arm. Ava just stared at the closed door.
"Jake... Lena?" Ava collapsed to the floor. Shocked, Elana and Maya picked her up and helped her to a seat.
"Maya!" An middle aged couple came running up. "How is she?" It was Lena's parents. Emily, Lena's mother, looked at the exhuasted Ava.
"Is this Ava?" squatting down to look at her. Maya nodded.
Emily looked at Ava and pulled her into a hug. "Come here my child. Lena's going to be fine, ok?" Ava burst into tears, the relief from holding on for so long spilling out.
They stayed like that for quite some. The mother and the girlfriend comforting each other.
After about four hours, a doctor came out, "Are you Lena Brooks' family?"
Emily and Ava answered at the same time, "Yes." Emily smiled.
"She is going to be fine. She's being moved into the ICU at the moment. You'll be able to see her later when she's transferred to the ward." The doctor paused, "Her injuries were quite extensive. While we expect her to make a full recovery with time, it's quite possible she will walk with a slight limp in the future."
Covering her mouth, "Her swimming!?" Ava cried. Emily, who was suprisingly calm said, "Thank you, Doctor."
Hospital Ward
Lena slowly opened her eyes. The bright light from window causing some discomfort. As her eyes slowly adjusted, she could feel someone leaning on her legs. Looking down, she saw a sleeping Ava, who's brow was furrowed in her sleep. She was clearly having a bad dream. Lena gentl shook her.
Ava woke up, realising that Lena was now awake. She jumped and hugged her tightly. Kissing her repeatedly.
"Ok, Ok. I'm fine now..." Lena smiled, "Thank you."
"Thank me? Do you need to thank me? I'm your girlfriend. I love you!"
Lena kissed her on the lips softly and watched Ava's smiling face. She could see how tired she was. When was the last time she properly slept? How long has it been? It was then that Lena noticed the cast on her leg. Her hand reached out and slowly touched the cast.
"My leg?" Lena sadly looked at the cast, a tear escaping from her eye.
"The doctor will talk to you later..." Ava pulled out her phone and started dialling, "Emily? It's Ava. Yes. She's awake. Ok. See you soon." She hung up. "Your mum's on her way."
"You have my mother's number now?" said Lena, raising an eyebrow.
About an hour later, the doctor came into the room, Emily walking in behind him. He then explained Lena's injuries to Lena put on a brave face, as Ava hugged her, weeping.
"Aya.... What are you crying about? I'll be fine... You'll see.." said Lena as she looked out the window, patting Ava on the back softly.
