4 years later...
Lena sat on the couch as she watched her five year old daughter, Mia, playing in front of her. She had been adopted two years ago. The TV was playing in the background, the sports channel was on as usual.
While she no longer swam competitvely, she had established herself a renowned swimming coach, with a long waiting list to join her classes. So she still enjoyed watching the swimming competitions on TV. Both mother and daughter watched intently. Mia also had a keen interest in swimming.
Today, they were interviewing the recently crowned champion, Ava Morgan, Lena's former girlfriend.
"Ms Morgan, you took the gold in most of your swimming events, how do you feel?"
"What can I say? Ecstatic." Ava smiled.
"She's still as beautiful as when we first met," mumbled Lena. Her long brown hair falling over her face.
"What did you say Mummy?"
Lost in thought, Lena didn't respond. She was thinking back to that day four years ago, when Ava left to fly to another city. It was the most heartbreaking moment of her life.
On the TV, "So, is there anyone you'd like to thank?" the interviewer questioned.
"I have to thank my teammates, sponsors, and trainers. Also the organisers, and my coaches. Without them, I wouldn't have been able to achieve this success," said Ava smiling broadly.
"Also, I can't forget..." Ava looked directly at the camera, "My wife and daughter who are waiting patiently for me at home. Lena, Mia. I love you! I'll be home soon!"
"Mummy, look! Mummy is on TV!" Mia cried out excitedly. Waving at the TV.
As Lena walked out of the terminal, she heard someone calling from behind. She turned to see Ava running up to her. Ava lept into her arms and hugged her tightly, not wanting to let go.
'Marry me!" she whispered into Lena's ear. "I love you. I want to spend my life with you, even if we have to be apart! Marry me?"
Holding Ava tightly, Lena quietly replied.
"Yes. Yes, I'll marry you!"
Mia turned back from the TV, "When is Mummy coming home?"
Lena rubbed her clearly pregnant belly, "Soon baby. She'll be home soon." Lena smiled as she looked around their family home.
She looked at their wedding photo's hanging on the wall and the family photo's sitting on the shelves that recorded the life they'd built together.
Lena's phone rang. It was Ava.
"Hey babe! I miss you. How's Mia? Is she behaving?"
"Everything's fine. How long till you get back? Elana and Maya's wedding is on this weekend!."
"I'll be back before then, I'm boarding now. Talk soon, my love. Tell Mia and April I love them"
"I will. And I haven't agreed to the name April yet!" Lena said, smiling as she feigned annoyance.
"I love you, Lena."
"Love you too."
