CHAPTER SIX

Despite the massive feast that sat on the long table in front of her and all the excited chatter from other students, Athena sat with an empty plate and felt alone. She had looked over at her brother. He was laughing and making new friends at the Gryffindor table, while she sat all alone at the Slytherin table.

Ron's words about those who were sorted into Slytherin kept replaying in her mind. There isn't a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin. She couldn't help but wonder what that would mean for her now that she had been sorted into that house. Could she beat the stereotype and stay good? Or would she fall into the darkness like so many had done before?

"Aren't you hungry?"

Athena looked up to see two girls - one blonde, the other brunette - standing side by side looking at her. They looked like they were the same age as her, so Athena figured they were first years too. "Uh...a little but...I don't know." Athena sighed.

"It's all good stuff. I promise." The blonde girl said as she squeezed in-between Athena and the sixth year that was sitting next next to her. The brunette girl squeezed in on Athena's left side.

"I'm Freya, by the way. She's Maeve." The blonde girl smiled.

"I'm Athena." Athena replied. "Though you probably already know that. Everyone seems to know. All because of this." She turned her hand over to reveal the scar on her palm. Both Freya and Maeve leaned in to get a closer look at Athena's scar. "My brother has the same scar, except his is on his forehead. Though you probably already know that too."

"We do." Maeve admitted. "But that's not why we want to be you friends."

"Friends?" Athena questioned. She said the word friends as if it were something foreign to her.

"You say that like you haven't had friends before." Freya laughed.

"Well, I haven't. Not really. The only friend I've ever had is my brother." Athena said.

Maeve frowned. How sad, she thought. She quickly changed the frown into a smile. "Well, that has officially changed. Harry is no longer your only friend."

"Really?" Athena asked. A small, yet hopeful smile slowly began to creep across her face.

"'Course." Maeve said.

The smile on Athena's face become much more defined as she ate and talked with her new found friends. She had glanced over at her brother several times, each time they smiled and waved at one another. They had always been close growing up, both figuratively and literally, so it was a strange time for them to be sitting so far apart. They would be living separately, in their own dorms and in their own beds for the first time in their entire lives.

But Athena was sure they would both be fine. Especially since Harry had Ron and Hermione, and she had Maeve and Freya.

Luckily for all three girls, they had been assigned to share the same dorm room. She had met Maeve's snowy owl, Fiona, and met Freya's black cat, Crow. The owls would spend most of their time at the school's owlery, but Crow was allowed to roam the castle as she pleased. However, she never strayed that far from Freya's side.

Athena neatly unpacked her belongings and placed them in the chest at the foot of her bed, the dresser and the small nightstand. "There's two more beds." She noted, looking around the room. "Where are the others?" She asked.

"Granny said we have the smallest year group Hogwarts has ever seen. So, it's probably just going to be us." Freya said, sitting on her bed.

"Who is your Granny?" Athena asked.

"Professor McGonagall." Freya replied. "She's been looking after me ever since I was little. She even helped Maeve's dad look after her too."

"That's true." Maeve added.

"She seems really nice." Athena said.

"Oh, she is." Freya smiled. "She's the best."

The three girls spent the rest of the evening talking and getting to know each other. They had a lot more in common than they thought, and by the time light's out  came around, the were laughing together as if they had done for years. Maeve and Freya had tucked themselves into bed, and had almost instantly fallen asleep. Athena wasn't so lucky.

She had gotten herself under the covers of her bed, but couldn't close her eyes. She found herself looking up at the ceiling, thinking about anything and everything. She was away from her brother, she had a huge bedroom and not to mention a bed to herself. She was very excited and very nervous all at the same time. She was grateful that she was able to make friends with Maeve and Freya. They certainly made Athena's nerves ease slightly. Not completely but slightly.

After another hour had passed and she still failed to fall asleep, Athena got out of bed and sat by a window. The window sill was just big enough to allow her to sit on it and stretch her legs out in front of her; which in turn gave Adira the perfect place to land as she flew over to join Athena.

"I'm glad you and I have become such fast friends." Athena said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. She raised her hand and gently stroked the owl's head. Athena looked back out the window and gazed up at the stars that twinkled in the dark sky above.

"We're going to be okay here, right?" Athena asked quietly.

When she turned her head to look at Adira, she was looking right back at her. She was looking at Athena as if she was listening to what she was saying. Athena smiled and stroked the owl's head again. "Yeah, I think so too."
