The 22nd day of the 6th moon of 265 AC
It was a cloudy and peaceful morning in King's Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. The sun peeked through the clouds, casting its light on the smallfolk as they went about their daily routines—whether working as farmers, laborers, builders, shopkeepers, servants, or soldiers.
The smallfolk, struggling to get by in their tough peasant lives, work hard just to get enough food. Lacking authority and power, those in charge often overlook them, treating them primarily as sources of food or soldiers instead of valuing them as individuals.
While looking down at the city from the castle above the homes belonging to the smallfolk, there was a four-year-old boy with silver-blonde hair, purple eyes, and fair skin.
Prince Aerion of House Targaryen is the second-born son of King Aerys II Targaryen and his queen, his sister-wife, Rhaella Targaryen. He is the secondary heir of the Iron Throne after his older brother, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, who is older by a year.
Aerion strolled through the Red Keep's corridors, his gaze fixed on the bustling city below. He felt the sun on his skin whenever the giant ball of fire peeked through the clouds over King's Landing.
The prince didn't know how the smallfolk lived, but he had an idea. His face scrunched in disgust every time he caught the pungent smell that lingered throughout the city. Aerion understood that the smallfolk didn't live the same life as his family. While his family, the Targaryens, were royalty and ruled over the Seven Kingdoms, the royal family and the lords that ruled over them ignored the smallfolk.
Aerion wishes he could do more for the people of King's Landing, but he feels helpless as a simple prince with limited power. With his father on the throne and his brother Rhaegar destined to be the future king, what role can he play?
As the king's second son, Aerion lives in the shadow of his father and older brother.
As the young prince walked through the halls of the Red Keep, he arrived at the library, the one place he knew Rhaegar wouldn't come and bother him. The older boy hated the library. He found it boring and useless, so he wanted nothing to do with it.
There was an immense wealth of information and knowledge within the books of the library, and Aerion silently prayed that Rhaegar wouldn't do something reckless, like set the place on fire.
The young prince spent the rest of the morning in the library, reading, learning, and taking in the information from the books—that was until Aerion found his next book, a thick, leather-bound tome on the history of Valyria.
After Aerion pulled the book free from the shelf, there was a soft thud behind him. Turning, he saw a small, dusty scroll that had fallen from a higher shelf, landing near his feet.
Curious, Aerion bent down to pick it up. The scroll was ancient, much older than the books surrounding it. Time had frayed its edges, and age had yellowed the parchment. There were no markings on the outside to suggest what it might contain, but Aerion's heart quickened. Something about this felt... important.
