Zoë drove the van south like a crazy person. It was hard to keep up with her, and we seemed to be flying forever.
I could tell Peg was starting to regret sticking with me, because she whinnied in annoyance every time we lost sight of the van.
And even worse, it gave me time to think about what Mr. D had told me. If he were in the Fates' place, he would've ordered me dead. I mean, I knew he was an asshole, but I didn't know he was that much of one. Plus, he was hoping Percy would die on this quest too.
Gods, I hated him so much. Congratulations, Zoë, someone has just been put way above you on my hate list.
We flew for a long while. Percy ended up telling me about another dream he had. This one wasn't good either. Apparently, Artemis was now holding up the cavern that Annabeth had been holding, but Luke insisted on keeping her a prisoner.
That meant that Artemis was captured, too, which was the whole reason the quest even started. I felt kind of dumb, realizing that I had joined a quest whose objective I didn't even know.
Later, when we were into Maryland, Zoë finally pulled over at a restaurant stop. Blackjack nearly tumbled out of the sky, he was so tired.
We landed a little bit away from the convenience store. I could tell Peg was grateful for that.
"You guys stay here," Percy told us. "I'm going to scout."
I protested. "I'm the one who can turn invisible. It would be bad if Zoë saw you."
Percy pulled out a Yankees baseball cap from his bag. It was Annabeth's.
"Oh. You brought that."
"I won't be long." Percy put the hat on his head and vanished from view.
I was left there with two pegasi, who I couldn't speak to unlike Percy. Every once in a while, I noticed Blackjack glancing at Peg, who wouldn't so much as look at him. I was probably reading to much into it, but I wondered if there was romance afoot.
I had nothing to do, so I took my backpack and started rummaging through it to pass the time. I spotted the iPhone Themis had given me.
Again, I was reminded of how good it was that I had packed this bag.
And what's weird is I can't even say that fate allowed this to happen. It was just luck. That made me feel uneasy. Everything good and bad that had or will happen to me will be just from luck.
Soon enough, Percy returned. He told me how he had ran into Zoë, Thalia, Grover, and Bianca immediately. "They're heading to D.C.," he told me.
"D.C., huh?" I put my backpack around my shoulders. "All right, then."
We continued south, following the van. As we did so, Percy asked me, "Hey, how old is Zoë exactly?"
"Why are you asking that?" I wondered.
"Well, I overheard her say that she's been driving since cars were invented."
I shrugged. "I don't know when she was born, and frankly, I don't care. But seeing as how she is immortal, it's not farfetched to say she's been alive for centuries. Especially when she uses words like 'thee' and 'thy.'"
"I guess. It just makes me wonder what bad experiences she's had with heroes."
I scoffed. "Knowing Zoë, she'd consider what I said years ago to be her getting hurt by a hero."
