EVEN BEFORE I was chased down by a bunch of makeup-wielding monsters, I was having a horrible day.
First off, I missed the bus to school, and Mom had to drive me instead, which made her late.
Then, I couldn't find my history textbook in the hopeless mess that is my locker, and I was late looking for it. (I still didn't find it and received a toungue-lashing for not bringing all of my materials to class.)
And lastly, Kellie Camillis and her band of airheads- sorry, group of friends- had decided that I was their new "project" and they were going to "transform" me.
Which is popular girl talk for following you around and trying to forcefully apply makeup to your face after school, in case you didn't know.
"Kellie, I told you I don't want a makeover!" I yelled, dodging a tube of lip-gloss and a mascara brush. The group had me trapped like a rat in the corner by the science room.
"Oh, hon, that's what they all say," Kellie smiled. She called everyone 'hon' or 'sweetheart'- just another creepy tactic to make you feel small and stupid. "Think of all the others we transformed, Kyli! Weren't they so happy with the end result?"
One of her clique members hesitantly raised their hand. "Actually, didn't Kate, like, move to the other side of town because she didn't want us following her anymore?"
"Shut up, Allison. No one wants to hear it." Kellie snapped. "Amiright, girls?"
A chorus of nods and "Mmm-hmms" followed her statement. I saw my opportunity to escape and took it. Ducking under a girl's arm, I made a mad dash to the nearest exit, book bag thumping against my side.
"Get her!" Kellie yelled. I heard the thunderous sound of eight pairs of designer shoes chasing me. My lungs strained for air. Five feet to go.
Four feet to go. I could practically feel their hairspray on the back of my neck.
Three feet to go. One of them made a grab for my t-shirt and barely missed, their perfectly manicured fingernails scraping down my spine.
Two feet. Kellie tossed a rhinestone- embedded hairbrush at me. It sailed over my shoulder and hit the door, glancing off.
One foot. I could smell their fake "Chanel No. 5" perfume.
Zero feet. I was out the door and running down the sidewalk at top speed, praying to God that the pack of spray-tanned wolves chasing me were uncomfortable off their home territory.
Taking a risk, I glanced behind me. As I had hoped, they weren't following me beyond the school doors. Glaring, they pooled out inside the school, pushing up against the doors.Kellie shook her fist. "Kyli Williams! Get back here this instant so we can give you a makeover!"
Kellie wants to stay in the place where she's a perfect angel child and can do no wrong, I thought, rolling my eyes. Must be nice to be the principal's niece.
I slowed my run to a walk, gasping for air. Shouldering my book bag (which was a little battered from the chase but otherwise okay) I started off for home.
