Chapter Thirty-Two
New Beginnings

Alyssa watched Carl's chest move up and down with each breath. In the quiet of the morning, she could hear his heart beating at a steady rhythm. The morning beams of sunlight reflected off his skin. She liked quiet moments like these. Just the two of them in peace.

It had been about a month since the breach and Alexandria was doing okay. They were still running low on supplies, but they expanded and reinforced the walls. The people were rebuilding their lives after a dark wake-up call and they were better off for it.

For the better part of that month, Alyssa had been sneaking up to Carl's room every night and sneaking back to hers every morning. She wasn't sure why, but she just slept better when he was near. And she knew Carl felt the same.

"You watching me sleep, weirdo?" Carl asked, revealing he'd been awake for a while now. He opened his eyes and grinned at her.

Alyssa rolled her eyes so dramatically her head moved along. "You ruin everything," she declared, rolling from her stomach onto her side. "I have to get back. Rosita's been getting up at 7 for her shift on the wall the past few days," she said before starting to sit up, only to get pulled back by Carl.

"So we have, like..." Carl looked at his alarm, "fifteen minutes."

Alyssa rolled her eyes. "Can't risk it," she argued.

"Why does it matter? They know we're dating," Carl countered.

"Yes, but if they know I'm staying over, they're gonna get the wrong idea and I would rather chop off my leg and feed it to a Walker than have 'the talk' with Glenn and Maggie," Alyssa explained. She sat up again and put on her socks and jacket. She left her shoes on the porch behind a plant pot so as to not dirty the house or risk creaky floorboards waking up Rick and Michonne.

Carl's face scrunched up, imagining having to have 'the talk' with his own dad. "You make a good point," he said.

Alyssa hummed and turned back around to give him a kiss. "I'll see you tonight."

Carl nodded and lay back down. "See you tonight."

After the amount of time she spent by Carl's side in the aid station, Alyssa had found herself starting to become somewhat of an assistant to Denise. She'd shown her pretty much everything she did on everyone that came in. Cleaning wounds and changing bandages, which meds to use for what, and how to perform a checkup.

Alyssa considered herself pretty knowledgeable on the topic of first aid and most of the things she saw in taking care of wounds were familiar to her already. But she found the other tasks pretty interesting too. So, after a few days, she asked Denise if she would be up to letting her hang around even after Carl was better and teaching her what she knew.
