I tried to stay out of Hunter's way. Not because I was afraid of him – I didn't even avoid Seth because... sometimes. It's just that Hunter always put me in an awkward position. Because he was completely taciturn. I didn't know how to behave when I was alone with him. But, frankly, Hunter himself avoided me. As soon as I appeared in the same room with him, he immediately left. At some point, it started to make me nervous. Not in annoying kind of way. None of the guys could actually annoy me – I admired them too much. I was afraid – scared – that I was doing something wrong. But, based on the situation, it seemed that my very existence was completely wrong. I couldn't explain his behavior in any other way.
What I loved about Hunter was his honesty. One day I decided to find out if he really despised me so much that he preferred to avoid me. Hunter replied that I was not such an important person that he would even think about me. And although it was quite harsh, this response made me feel relieved.
Since then, I would say our relationship has improved a bit. In general, nothing has changed – I just stopped being so nervous. And Hunter, I hope, gave me credit for daring to approach him with such a question. From time to time, it even happened that he did not leave the room in which I found myself. Well... didn't leave it right away. I waited. Later, I noticed that Hunter didn't just do this to me – when he didn't need to contact anyone, he didn't do it. This means he avoided everyone. Otherwise, God forbid, we'll decide to chat with him.
Hunter and Seth have always had a purely business relationship. At least on the surface. It was impossible to imagine them sitting in a bar after another case at all. But who knows, right? Hunter was the only one of us who followed all orders implicitly. I know what you're thinking – I'll explain it now.
Magic was a partner, which was why she could argue with Seth, disagree with him, and all that kind of stuff. In front of us, of course, it all looked very soft. Letha and I, in general, did not take part in the discussions. And some of Seth's orders made us freeze in place and blink our eyes. Then, accordingly, we got scolded... Hunter was different. He nodded and left the room. He could have clarified some details. But that's it. I think that's why Seth chose him.
Letha... Although Hunter's relationship with Letha seemed strange to me, there were still some details that made it clear that they were connected by family ties... or something similar to it. For example, when passing by, Hunter often said, "don't forget to eat." And if he caught Letha and me in the living room late at night, he would definitely throw her a "don't stay up late." During all this time, I managed to understand that Hunter raised Letha more with a whip than a carrot.
But the situation with Magic still seems to me to be something incredibly interesting. She and Hunter were kind of "friends" against their will. In this case, of course, the word "accomplices" is more appropriate. The two shouldn't have crossed paths, but when they did, they immediately found a common language. It was like they were on the same wavelength. But at any moment they could go their separate ways, never thinking about each other again.
This may seem strange to you – due to my inexperience and the contempt from some members of the group – but one of my assignments was to spy on Dubois. Nothing special – I just had to know where and when he was.
In fact, the guys had known his schedule by heart for a long time. But, as you probably understand – force majeure has always been possible. I had to confirm that Raphael was not near the place where one of our people was supposed to go. It sounds kind of simple.
But how exhausting it was.
Dubois wasn't my sworn enemy, so I didn't hate him as much as Seth did. The whole revenge thing seemed a little dramatic to me. But who am I to judge? I didn't know what Magic's feelings were – whether she was doing all this for Seth's sake or whether she also had some personal scores. With Hunter and Letha, everything was obvious – just a job.
