DCP Amarnath Duggal arrested for sexual assault and rape attempt; Chargesheet to be filed in two weeks
In a shocking course of events, the city Crime Branch's DCP Amarnath Duggal was arrested by Bombay police on Thursday for alleged sexual assault and attempt to rape charges. The Chembur station police have registered an FIR based on the complaint lodged by Deepa*(name changed due to privacy rights), accusing DCP Amarnath of the offence.
The victim, a resident of Chembur, claims to have been standing on KB Road on the 26th of September, at around ten in the night when Amarnath, on the pretext of dropping her home, lured her into his car and sexually assaulted her. The complaint also accuses him of attempting to rape her. But she managed to get out of the vehicle on Duleep Sagar Marg.
A case has been booked against the officer under IPC sections 354, 376 and 511. The investigation is led by the zonal DCP Parthiban Selvarasan. Broken glass bangle pieces found in Amarnath's car and the bruises on the victim's hand indicate the signs of a struggle.
Sources say the accused would be handed over to judicial custody within twenty-four hours.
'We shall investigate the case from all angles before filing the chargesheet,' DCP Parthiban said, later that day.
'Everybody is equal under the law. Guilty shall be punished. I request the public to have faith in our judiciary. Neither I nor our party members shall interfere in such matters,' The Home Minister reacted from his office on the evening following Amarnath's arrest.
The City Police Commissioner refused to make any public statement on the issue. But it is said that he has strictly warned the officers from manhandling the accused and employing any form of physical violence.

Two weeks later:
'Where's Gauri?' Dr. Kailash asks as soon as he returns home.
His wife points her chin towards Gauri's bedroom. 'She has still not stopped thinking about him.'
Dr. Kailash puts his coat away and sits down with a sigh. 'It's not that easy, Kalpana.'
'Is it easy for her if she keeps sulking? Is it easy for us to see her like this? We'd sent her with him to Punjab. Alone! Thank god she came back safe. I get so scared if I think about it now.'
Dr. Kailash throws up his hands slowly. 'I don't know what to say ... he seemed like a very decent boy ... '
They spend a moment in silence, staring into space and looking tragic.
'If it was anything else ... corruption, money laundering, fake encounter, anything ... I would have believed the allegation was false. But this?? No girl will lie about such things, Kailash,' Mrs. Kalpana looks at Gauri's closed bedroom door. 'And this girl just doesn't understand ... trust is good. But not blind trust like this ... '
At that moment, Gauri's bedroom door clicks open. She walks into the hall, looking squarely at her mother.
'Mom, if you wanna say something, just tell me directly.'
