Unseen Realm

Edge of Eternity

The Treasure Guardian unsheathed his sword.

"That's the Seventh Sword of Diya!" Indy blurted, his instincts knowing immediately. "You trust me to use that? Properly? After I've failed in so many other things?"

The Treasure Guardian echoed the archaeologist's grin. "You've chosen wisely. And you've chosen loyalty. The apkallu already fear you, because you remind them of me."

Indy frowned, searching his memories. "Because I drank from the Holy Grail?"

"The Grail is just a cup, Dr. Jones. The water of eternal life is a covenant."

"Then... how was Dad healed?"

"He chose belief, trust and loyalty to something he didn't understand," the Treasure Guardian explained. "When each person chooses loyalty to me they replace the Ark of the Covenant."

Shock slackened Indy's face and the weight of one of his biggest professional failures fell off his shoulders. He stood a little straighter. "So... no one needs the Ark? No one needs to study the Ark?"

The Treasure Guardian laughed. "No. And people replaced the apkallu too. Lizavet knows she has power over them through loyalty to me. And now you know too."

"So my family's not threatened by the apkallu?"

"No. I made Eden for a family. Eden was a reflection of heaven."

Indy stared at his boots... seeing his reflection on the floor. He knelt, touching the floor. "This is the same stone the mirror of heaven is made from."

The Treasure Guardian continued, "That family was supposed to make the whole earth like Eden... a sacred space of beauty where all could gather in safety for healing. They haven't yet. And I will continue to risk everything to bring families together. Go back to yours."

He touched Indy's shoulders with the sword, as if knighting him in service to a king.
