"Alright, look." Principal Bolan said to a very annoyed Jessica Davis and Nessa Dempsey as they sat in his office, their arms crossed over their chests as they glared at the man. "Given how destructive and public the events at the Homecoming game were, we're looking at a multiple day suspension."
"Okay." both girls said, refusing to fight the man on his decision. They knew it wouldn't get them anywhere.
"And I understand that there are some very strong feelings here and that you and your group have an important voice that needs to be heard, and I want to be sensitive to that." Principal Bolan told both girls, and Nessa had to stop herself from rolling her eyes. "But, I also want to find a solution that is positive, even progressive, as well as remedial."
Both Jessica and Nessa's phones buzzed at the same time, signaling that something was going on in their twisted group chat of friends bonded together by issues rather than memories. Nessa pulled out her phone subtly and glanced down to read the text that Clay had just sent them.
Wasn't about Tyler. Bryce Walker is missing. Hasn't been seen since the game.
"Fuck." Nessa muttered under her breath as she looked at Jessica, who had a sullen look on her face.
"Excuse me?" Principal Bolan said, and both girls snapped up.
"She means, yes! Whatever." Jessica said in a peppy voice, and Nessa simply smiled at the man as they both shoved their phones into their backpacks, trying to forget what they had just seen.
"If I suspend you two, I have to suspend everybody in your group." Principal Bolan told the girls. "Not to mention Clay Jensen and Tyler Down. As well as the majority of the football team – Zach Dempsey, Justin Foley, Scott Reed, Charlie St. George, Montgomery De La Cruz."
"Wouldn't that be a shame?" Nessa asked sarcastically. "If Monty got suspended?"
She was nowhere near over the threats that Montgomery had sent to the tape subjects during the trial last year, herself included.
Principal Bolan sat up in his chair, ignoring Nessa's remark about Monty. "We have damage to our stadium and to our field. We had to cancel the homecoming dance. I have football players walking around with black eyes and bloody faces like they've been through wars."
Nessa shared no sympathy for most of the football team, other than Charlie. He was a sweet boy, and Nessa really liked him. He deserved nothing of the sort. The rest of them, even her friends, had all deserved a little smacking around now and then. Montgomery deserved far worse.
"Isn't that what football's all about?" Jessica asked, reading Nessa's mind.
"I have the Dean of Students of Hillcrest calling threatening personal injury lawsuits." the principal continued, and Nessa held back a snort. The Dean of Students of Hillcrest was the absolute least of her concerns, considering they let her and Jessica's rapist onto the field against Liberty in the first place.
"Well, they started it." Nessa retorted through a light chuckle.
"Our students threw all the first punches." Principal Bolan countered her.
