He was smiling, because he couldn't help it at that very moment. Because her mere presence managed to silence, at least partially, the little voice that whispered insidiously to him to never let his guard down.

He did not let his guard down, quite the opposite actually.

The very idea that something could happen to her because of him had pushed him to maintain a distance, even though his heart screamed that she was the answer to his questions and to his prayers, that she was the one, his soulmate, his everything.

When he told the prosecutor that he had considered every scenario, he was not lying. He had grown up always having to consider every possibility, every risk, never leaving anything to chance, always having to be on his guard. Since his father had kidnapped him, the little carefreeness that the young boy had retained, had vanished.

He remembered when, terrified, taken away from his house by men dressed all in black, he had not even thought about his own fate. His mind remained on the little girl hiding in the trash container.

Was anyone going to find her and rescue her? Wasn't there a risk of a garbage truck coming to take and empty the container? Would she be okay? Was she going to miss him?

So many questions that he then had to push to the back of his mind, too busy surviving in his new life, his new identity.

But every night she came back to haunt him, every night he relived the scene, every night he wondered if she was okay.

He didn't know exactly when his goal of coming back and finding her stopped being a goal. When he realized he had become one of those he had sworn to protect her from. When he understood that this past which haunted him could become a dangerous present for her.

And then she had come back into his life, in an explosion of color, in a chaos that had both terrified and irresistibly attracted him. He recognized her, he couldn't say how or why, so many years had passed, but there was something strangely familiar in her eyes, and when she confirmed her name, he knew.

He had found the one he was no longer looking for.

And she had turned his life upside down. But also that of his men, for whom she had become a big sister or a little sister, she had been able to see beyond appearances, she had been able to tame them, and he even sometimes wondered if they had not become more loyal to her than to him. Not that he minded.

But for now, as she dozed beside him, she was all his. Her eyelashes quivered on her cheek, and he marveled for the umpteenth time at her skin which seemed to be made of alabaster. His fingers traced her face, brushing against her slightly parted lips.

He laughed when he saw that she was drooling slightly and felt overwhelmed again by the love he felt for her.

He knew he was possessive and fiercely protective, but that was because he knew darkness was following him, and he wondered if she was aware that he could give his life for her. Without a second thought. Because he couldn't live in a world where she was not.

“Are you going to kiss me?” »

He flinched, realizing he had been staring at her lips, and he raised his eyes to meet hers, which were glistening with mischief.

He held back a smile.

“I was just looking because you drooled…”

Her eyes widened in horror as she gasped and hurriedly turned her back on him to wipe her mouth.

He laughed and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, nuzzling his chin against her shoulder.

" Why are you hiding… "
