"hello? what's going on here?" my sister ruby asks from the doorway, and i'm both concerned and relieved to see her. she looks at our two uninvited guests and then me in confusion."who are they?"
that's what i'd like to know, so when i report them for breaking and entering or technically just entering, it'll put me at ease. i want to be able to identify these weirdos and avoid crossing paths with them ever again.
"bee, don't worry about it why don't you head back to the pool, and i'll text you in a bit." if these morons wanted to do something, then they would have already. but i've decided it would be best to keep her out of harm's way just in case while i sort this out. maybe she'd even take the hint and return with reinforcements.
"what? no." that, however, would not be the case because i forget she's as headstrong and gutsy in the face of danger as i am. she circles them to stand in solidarity on the other side of the room with me.
"what are you guys doing here harassing my sister?" she addresses them sharply, arms crossed over her chest. ruby may be younger than me by twenty minutes, but she tends to take charge when the situation calls for it.
guy number one's face drains of all colour when he hears the word harassment.
"harassment? we weren't harassing her. she's the one—you guys are the ones who, for the last time, shouldn't be in here. i don't know what you think the outcome would be, but you're living in delusion if you believe we'd still consider you a fan. when you've lost all common sense in your obsession."
"and i've been telling you," i pipe back up, "that isn't true. i don't know why we're still having this conversation. wait a minute, did you just say fan?"
