Chaptire Neuf: Girls Girls Girls
One would think that finding a cabin in a desolate woods would bring a sense of joy to deserters. But instead, it riled up the survivors and brought forth their anxiousness. They banged on the windows and doors until a few decided to shove it open and go inside. It far from luxurious, with cobwebs lacing what looked like decades old furniture and pests eating rotten food left on the table.
"It reeks in here," Jackie commented while looking up the fogged window covered in dust and insect carcasses.
It was evident that it had been abandoned a long time ago by its owner, but they were determined to scavenge whatever they could find.
"You guys, check the pantry, see if there's any food." Taissa ordered Jackie and Mari before facing the others, "Everyone else, look around for stuff we can use. First aid, flashlights, tools."
Mack stuffed a cough into her elbow as she spun around, searching for a place to start. Despite of her hesitancy towards the place, she wondered if she could find batteries, or at least something that could help her fix the plane's radio.
Her first destination was the kitchen, her light eyes scanning through every dark crevasse in the room. Eventually, she found herself before a few cabinets and swung them open, finding nothing but rusted utensils and damp matches. Sucking her teeth, she closed them and headed over to the assortment of jars sitting on the counter.
She popped one open, and gingerly lowered her head down to take a whiff. It was filled with oats that still smelled good. Mackenzie furrowed her brows as she dipped a finger inside and pulled out a flake. The girl looked it over before resting it on the tip of her tongue. Her stomach nearly did a back flip as the flavor soaked into her tastebuds.
"Ugh, fuck."
Mackenzie turned towards the scene behind her, grimacing at the sight of the moldy beans on the floor.
"See, this is why we should've stayed in the plane!" Jackie huffed with frustration and embarrassment reddening her face, making her resemble a child.
And like an unamused adult, Van folded her arms over her chest, "Yeah, well, we didn't."
Feeling like she was on the execution block, Jackie faced her way. Van canted her head slightly and asked, "So this is helping, how exactly?"
"This is a fucking nightmare." Jackie said before storming off, her feet slamming against the floorboards with every stomp. Once she was reached the porch, everyone resumed back to normal, everyone but Mack.
Mackenzie sat the jar of oats down and swiveled her head around for something she could use to pick the beans up with. After a few seconds of searching, Mack picked a chipped plate from off the table and walked over to the mess.
Van was leaving that corner at the same time when Mackenzie bumped shoulders with her. Her eyes followed the blonde and a smile grew on her face, "Oh, hey, what's going on with you?"
Mack didn't say anything as she scooped up a good portion of the goop and walked towards the window. She pushed it open, and with a the flick of her wrist, she dropped the plate onto the porch. Satisfied, Mack clapped her hands and then acknowledged Van.
