AUTHOR'S POV.

February, 2005
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
________

The sun was almost on its way to sunk following with the rise of moon. In the winter solstice, under orange hue ray of sunlight, there was a woman with swollen feet, bleeding because of the stinging of stone on her flats. The cloth with which she was hiding her little bean, flew away because of the sudden wave of wind tearing through her locks.

Casting a glance at the cloth, she didn't stop and with the amount of stamina left in her almost battered body, blood flowing from the injury on her forehead, a cut near her lips, puffed-up and red eyes. When she hear the foot steps of someone chasing her, she paced herself, running with all the force. Embracing her little bean close to her, hiding her in her arms. Not wanting those brutes to catch a glimpse of her baby.

The street she was running on was abondoned, her eyes caught an alleyway, the space was enough to hide her lean body. Noticing that the goons were not in her sight, she limp towards the alley and entered inside,  carefully so it don't hurt her baby. Hugging her close to herself, for her luck, her little bean was still in her sleep. And she was hoping for her to sleep until they both reach somewhere safe.

Making sure, she doesn't make any clamour of sound. All her jewelleries were taken off before she escaped, the only thing she was holding on was her mangalsutra.

The mangalsutra.

She doesn't even know whether the person she wears mangalsutra for, is alive or not. And if he's not, she's left with their last sign of love in her arms.

She can't risk her little bean's life.

If not herself, she has to save her baby.

"Please!" She pleaded, gazing at the sky that was slowly turning into the darkness of her life. Eyes brimming with fresh tears followed by a drop trailing down her face, and falling on her daughter's arm. Turning her gaze towards her baby, a smile creased on her lips at her peacefully sleeping face. "Maa will keep you safe, okay!" She whispered before planting a kiss on her little palm.

Her ears alerting at the sudden sound of foot steps and she continued passing through the alley. Halting at the end of the alleyway, she wandered her eyes around the disseminated desert in front of her. Not knowing where she should turn her ways to, clutching her soul close to herself, she titled her head only to find a narrow staircase of one story house build with claymud and bricks, at the corner of the alley.

When she heard the foot steps coming closer, without any thought, she ascended the stairs. Not turning her gaze towards the lizards and spiders on the walls. The moment she climbed the last stair, her eyes wandered around the view of her hometown in front of her. Her haweli's peak point was visible in her sight.
