Claire had always thought Zara was rude. The mysterious British girl with the rich dad and the best friend Alec. She was in most of Claire's classes, but she never seemed to talk to anyone except for Alec. Claire assumed it was because she thought she was better than everyone else.
That was until the day their chemistry teacher, Mr. Johnson, decided it would be a great idea to have them work in pairs. Claire just so happened to be sitting beside Zara. She groaned inwardly as Mr. Johnson told them to turn to the person next to them and introduce themselves.
"Hey, I'm Claire," she said, trying to sound friendly. She fidgeted with her pencil, feeling a little nervous.
"I'm Zara," the other girl replied. She had a posh accent, but she was smiling at Claire. Her green eyes sparkled with amusement.
They started working on the assignment Mr. Johnson had given them. Claire was surprised to find out that Zara was actually really good at chemistry. She was the one who ended up explaining most of the concepts to Claire. She was patient and never made Claire feel stupid for not understanding something.
As the days went by, Claire and Zara started sitting together in most of their classes. Well, Zara sat in the middle of Claire and Alec. Claire was surprised by how much she had misjudged Zara. She wasn't rude at all. She was actually really nice and funny. She had a dry sense of humor that Claire found herself laughing at a lot.
The first week they worked together, Claire learned that Zara loved tea and hated mornings. She was always a little grumpy in their first period class, but as the day went on, she perked up. Claire found herself looking forward to seeing Zara's smile every morning, even if she was grumpy.
One morning, as they were walking into their history class, Claire playfully teased Zara about her grumpiness. "Someone's not a morning person," she said, grinning at Zara.
Zara rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "I'll have you know, I'm perfectly pleasant in the mornings," she said. "After I've had my tea."
Claire laughed. "Well, we'll have to get you some tea then," she said.
The second week, Claire learned that Zara was a total nerd. She loved science and history, and was always eager to participate in class. Claire admired her confidence. She was never afraid to ask questions or give her opinion.
One day, in their science class, their teacher asked a question about cells. Zara's hand shot up immediately. "Is the answer the mitochondria?" she asked.
Their teacher nodded, impressed. "That's correct," he said. "Good job, Zara."
Claire turned to Zara, grinning. "Nerd," she teased.
Zara just shrugged. "Hey, someone has to represent the nerds," she said.
The third week, Claire and Zara started eating lunch together. Well, Zara sat in the middle of Claire and Alec. But Claire hardly even noticed Alec was there. She was too busy talking to Zara. They bonded over their shared love of books and TV shows.
One day, as they were eating, Claire mentioned her favorite book. "I just finished reading The Hate U Give," she said. "It was so good."
Zara's eyes lit up. "I loved that book," she said. "I've read it like three times."
Claire was excited. "Really?" she asked. "I just finished it for the first time. What did you think of it?"
Zara launched into a passionate discussion about the book. Claire was impressed by her insight. She loved seeing Zara so passionate about something.
As the weeks turned into months, Claire realized she was developing feelings for Zara. At first, she tried to brush it off as friendship. But as time went on, she couldn't deny the flutter in her chest whenever Zara smiled at her or touched her arm. She was scared to admit it, afraid of ruining their friendship. But she couldn't keep her feelings inside anymore.
