the next day, jake couldn't help but glance around, looking for sunghoon. finally, he spotted him coming into the dining hall.
"there he is," sunoo whispered, nudging jake.
"okay, okay, act normal," jake muttered, trying to play it cool.
sunghoon walked over to their table, giving a friendly wave. "hey, guys. mind if i join?"
"of course not," jungwon said, scooting over to make room.

the day went by smoothly. during lunch, they all decided to meet up at the student lounge again after their last class. jake was looking forward to it, especially the chance to spend more time with sunghoon.
when they met up, sunoo suggested they check out the rec center again. everyone agreed, and they headed over, excited to relax and have some fun.
at the rec center, they decided to play a few rounds of table tennis. as they were playing, jake noticed a group of older students entering the gym area, one of whom looked particularly intimidating.
"who's that?" jake asked, nodding towards the guy.
"that's park minjun," jungwon whispered. "he's got a bit of a reputation. not the friendliest guy around."
they tried to ignore minjun and his friends, but it was hard not to feel their presence. as jake and sunghoon played their match, minjun walked over, watching them with a smirk.
"nice game, kids," minjun said sarcastically. "think you can handle a real match?"
"we're just having fun," sunghoon said, trying to keep things calm.
"yeah, well, why don't we make it interesting?" minjun said, stepping closer. "a little wager, maybe?"
"we're not interested," jake said firmly.
"oh, come on," minjun taunted. "what's the matter? scared you'll lose?"
sunghoon stepped forward, his expression hardening. "leave us alone, minjun."
minjun laughed. "fine, i'll back off. but if you change your mind, you know where to find me."
as minjun walked away, jake let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. "what's his deal?"
"he likes to mess with people," jungwon said. "just ignore him."
"easier said than done," jake muttered.
...
later, as they were leaving the rec center, they ran into minjun again. this time, he seemed more aggressive.
"hey, jake," minjun called out. "you think you're so tough, huh?"
jake tried to ignore him, but minjun grabbed his arm. "i'm talking to you."
sunghoon immediately stepped in, pushing minjun away. "back off, man."
"oh, so you're his protector now?" minjun sneered. "this is pathetic."
"let's just go," jake said, pulling sunghoon back.
minjun wasn't done, though. he shoved sunghoon, making him stumble. "what are you gonna do about it?"
before jake could react, sunghoon swung at minjun, landing a punch on his jaw. minjun staggered back, looking furious. a fight broke out, with jake and his friends trying to pull sunghoon away.
"sunghoon, stop!" jake yelled, his heart racing.
security quickly arrived, breaking up the fight and pulling them apart. minjun was taken away, still yelling threats, while sunghoon was left with a split lip and a few bruises.
"are you okay?" jake asked, his voice shaky.
"yeah," sunghoon said, wiping blood from his lip. "sorry you had to see that."
"don't be," jake said. "you were just defending me."
they walked back to their dorms in silence, the tension still lingering. when they reached jake's dorm, sunghoon turned to him, his eyes filled with regret.
"i'm really sorry, jake," sunghoon said softly. "i didn't mean to cause trouble."
"it's okay," jake said, giving a reassuring smile. "you were just trying to help. thank you."
sunghoon nodded, looking relieved. "see you tomorrow?"
"yeah," jake said as he tippy toed a bit and kisses sunghoon's cheeks before running away. "goodnight, sunghoon-ah!!"
sunghoon was shocked and flustered at the same time by the shorter's bold move.
"ya!! sim jaeyun!!" he shouted as he smirked from the shorter's cuteness and walked away.
