Charlotte's POV

The moment we arrive at the hospital, we all hastily exit the car and rush inside. Isabella and I follow closely behind P'Sun, taking the stairs to the second floor.

At first, the floor appears empty until we turn left, and I am met with the sight of at least 50 people clad in black. I try to mask my shock but fail miserably.

P'Sun clenches his jaw and groans, "I explicitly told them not to come."

He continues walking, and we pass a few of the people in black. They all stare at me, but a stern look from Isabella makes them quickly avert their gazes. We proceed further until we see Pichy.

She rushes over and envelops Isabella in a tight hug. Isabella buries her face in Pichy's neck and begins to cry quietly.

"Are you alright? Is the baby okay? Have you had anything to eat?" Pichy inquires rapidly, not waiting for responses.

She tightens her embrace around Isabella, waiting for her to respond. Isabella pulls back from the hug and wipes her tears.

"I'm not hurt. The baby is fine, and no, I haven't eaten anything," Isabella answers in the order the questions were asked.

"P'Sun, get her something to eat," Pichy orders. P'Sun shakes his head, "Where is she?"

"Are you really going to let a pregnant woman starve?" Pichy presses, and P'Sun groans, heading towards the elevator.

"Where is she?" I repeat.

Pichy steps back and looks at me, then at Isabella. "In surgery," she replies, her anger visible.

"Where did the bullet hit?" I ask.

"I'm sorry, there was no other choice. If I hadn't authorized the surgery, the bullet that hit her femoral artery would have killed her. She was losing too much blood."

Isabella grabs Pichy's shoulder, forcing her to meet her gaze. "Where did the second bullet hit?"

Pichy sighs, "It's near her spine. We tried to move her as little as possible on the way here. I had to authorize the surgery, I couldn't just watch her die. I had to at least try to save her."

"What are you talking about? Why are you apologizing?" I ask, frightened.

"The doctors said she might never walk again if they proceed with the surgery. There are too many complications, and if something goes wrong, she could be paralyzed. They told me I could either leave her be or authorize the surgery. I couldn't just watch her die," Pichy raises her voice slightly.

She moves away from us, leaning against the wall. "Why is this happening? Why do I have to endure this again?"

"How long is the surgery?" I ask, trying to ignore her distress. I'm struggling to hold back my tears.

"Four to five hours."

"Who did this?" Isabella asks from beside me.

Pichy looks up from the ground and meets our eyes, "I don't know yet, but whoever is behind this will deeply regret messing with my family."

Before Isabella and I can respond, we see P'Sun approaching with a plate of spaghetti and a cup of orange juice.

"Here," he hands them to Isabella, who moves to a nearby chair and starts eating.

"You're her security, and you let her get hurt," Pichy whispers angrily, not wanting to disturb Isabella.

"Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until she said something. What happened to all the bodyguards outside?" P'Sun questions.

"They're all dead. They were poisoned."

"How could they have been poisoned?" he asks. Pichy shrugs, "I don't know yet."

P'Sun nods, "I made a promise. That's why I couldn't save her." He looks at me, and Pichy follows his gaze, also looking at me. The sudden eye contact makes me step back.

"Then forget what I just said. You did well," she replies softly, which makes me relax.

"Can I ask you a question?" I ask Pichy. She nods, waiting. I know this might not be the right time, but I have to know. "What happened to the guy who kidnapped Isabella and Engfa?"

Pichy takes a deep breath, glances at P'Sun, and then back at me. "I love my family, blood or not, and no one hurts them without paying for it. I took care of him. He will never hurt another person again," she answers.

That doesn't fully answer my question, but I know that's all I'll ever get out of her. What's important is that she protects those around her in the best way she can.

I nod, step away from them, and sit in a chair opposite Isabella. I close my eyes and lean my head back against the wall, trying to immerse myself in happier memories rather than the current situation.

Flashback

"I choose you," she murmurs, her fingernails gently grazing the soft skin of my cheek. She had just dropped me off at home but couldn't bring herself to leave. The rain was falling heavily around us, soaking us both to the bone, but neither of us cared.

Her face was millimeters from mine, the temptation to close the gap between us overwhelming. To satisfy the urge, I placed a gentle kiss on the corner of her mouth, an action quickly reciprocated.

"Every time?" I whispered as she pulled away, bringing my arms up to rest around her neck. She bent down and wrapped her arms beneath me, lifting me into her embrace.

"Every time," she promised. The tantalizing gap between us closed, and I knew then that I never wanted to kiss anyone else ever again.

End of Flashback

"Charlotte, wake up," I hear Isabella say as she starts shaking me.

I slowly open my eyes and meet her gaze. I rub my eyes and stand up.

"How long have I been asleep?"

"A couple of hours. They're about to bring Engfa out of surgery," she says, and right on cue, the surgery room doors open.

They roll Engfa out on a hospital bed. Suddenly, everyone moves toward the doctor, including the people in black who still haven't left.

The doctor looks up at us and smiles slightly, "The surgery went well. There’s no bleeding, and we were able to remove both bullets easily."

"What about the one near her spine?" Isabella questions.

"We removed the bullet without any complications, but we won't know if she’ll be able to walk until she wakes up."

"When will she wake up?" I ask quickly.

"Everything depends on her now. We've done everything in our power," the doctor replies. We all nod, and Pichy asks to speak to the doctor alone for a moment. They roll Engfa into an empty room. Everyone stays outside except Isabella and me. We walk in, and I slowly approach the bed, taking in Engfa's pale yet peaceful face.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve cried. I start wiping away my tears and lean down to kiss her forehead. I step back quickly, though, as I start to feel dizzy.

"Are you okay?" Isabella asks, worried.

I nod, but my head spins, and the last thing I see is Isabella’s panicked face before my eyes close, and I fall to the ground.
