Harry Styles as Troy Bolton: the most popular student at East High School, and the captain of the variety basketball team. On New Year's Eve, after singing with Maggie, he finds himself developing a crush on her.

Maggie Lindemann as Gabriella Montez: a new student and one of the brainiacs on the scholastic decathlon team. She develops a love for Harry after meeting him at a New Year's Eve party.

Michael Clifford as Chad Danforth: Harry's best friend. Jesy's love interest, and very good friends with Jason and Justin. He likes the status quo and later ends up dating Decathlon captain Jesy.

Jesy Nelson as Taylor McKessie: Maggie's friend, Michael's love interest, and very good friends with Selena and Becca. She is captain of the school's scholastic decathlon team, and despises the basketball players and cheerleaders, believing them to be airheads, although she later ends up going out with Michael.

Ashton Irwin as Sharpay Evans: Calum's twin brother and an energetic and proud student with a love for theatre. He very easily pushes around his brother. He is very mean, unlike him, but enjoys being the center of attention, particularly Harry's and is admired by Justin.

Calum Hood as Ryan Evans: Ashton's twin brother. He is very easily pushed around by his brother but is not as mean as him, despite going along with his plans to sabotage Harry and Maggie. He is also shown not to be particularly smart, such as not knowing how to spell "drama", never understanding Ashton's plans and is admired by Becca.

Niall Horan as Jack Bolton: Harry's father and the coach of the basketball team. He has a mutual dislike with Mr. Hemmings, thinks that theatre is worthless, and also believes that Maggie is a distraction to Harry's basketball career. However, he eventually comes out to it.

Justin Bieber as Zeke Baylor: a friend of Harry and Michael who plays for the basketball team. He also enjoys baking and is an admirer of Ashton.

Ariana Grande as Lucille Bolton: Harry Horan's mother and Niall Horan's wife. She is depicted as being somewhat annoyed with Harry and Niall's extreme dedication to basketball.

BarbaraSieger5 as Kelsi Neilson: a friend of Maggie and Jesy and a student at East High School. She is a pianist and composer. She is very shy and is constantly bossed around by Ashton, but in the end, she learns to stand for herself and not get bossed around by Ashton. She also enjoys composing and is an admirer of Calum.

Jason Dolley as Jason Cross: Selena's love interest, one of the jocks on the scholastic decathlon team and plays for the basketball team. He also tends to ask mundane questions to Mr. Hemmings's class. He is good friends with Harry, Michael and Justin.

Selena Gomez as Martha Cox: Jason's love interest and a preppy brainiac who enjoys hip-hop. She is good friends with Maggie, Jesy and Becca.

Zayn Malik as Principal Dave Matsui: the principal of East High. He is first seen welcoming Maggie Tomlinson to East High. He also seems to have to deal with the quarrels between Coach Niall Horan and Mr. Hemmings. He insists that they need to learn to work together, although he seems to have more interest in Coach Horan's side of the argument.

Luke Hemmings as Ms. Darbus: the stern drama teacher at East High. He despises sports and cell phones but takes his job very seriously, though he can be overdramatic. He clashes with Coach Niall Horan.

Demi Lovato as Ms. Tenny: the chemistry teacher at East High. Maggie corrects the teacher's math equation on the board in Chem Class.

Louis Tomlinson as Lisa Montez: Maggie's father. His job caused him to be transferred frequently from city to city, but he has been guaranteed that he and Maggie graduates from high school.

Taylor Swift as Ms. Falstaff: the librarian at East High. She keeps Michael quiet in the library and gets a book for Maggie and Ashton to read and takes her job very carefully.

Bridgit Mendler as Susan: a girl who unsuccessfully auditions for the winter musical but did not get the role.

Kevin Jonas as Alan: a boy who auditions for the winter musical but did not get the role. He is the second singer in the auditorium.

Katy Perry as Cyndra: a girl who auditions for the winter musical and is not happy when she does not get the role. She is the fourth singer in the auditorium.
