Gasping, I awoke; my mind a blur of chaotic panic, my heart jolting, my chest heaving. I search my surroundings to find myself in bed. My eyes dart to the lighted red words of the alarm clock, sitting on the nightstand beside my bed. 11:15 pm, on a Saturday, thank goodness. I sit up slowly, rubbing my temple for some relief, as my head is pounding. Sudden words fill my mind.

another bad dream ah?

I gasp. My eyes search the room for the speaker. No ones here.... It must be coming from my head.

shhh it's ok sweetie it wasnt real. Shhh. Daddy's here, daddy's got you, its ok.

I.....I rember this....memory, like it was yesterday....

hey, aren't pirates brave?
Come on violet be brave for daddy.

If you stop crying, I'll sing for you. You remember huh? The soft pretty song daddy plays on the piano? Your favorite.

I find myself nodding.

Ok, I'll try.

That's my girl.

dad held me close and sang. I used to love it when he sung his song.

If you'll be my star
I'll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black
And you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine

But you can skyrocket away from me
And never come back if you find another galaxy
Far from here with more room to fly
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by

If you'll be my boat
I'll be your sea
A depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity
Ebbing and flowing
And pushed by a breeze
I live to make you free
I live to make you free

But you can set sail to the west if you want to
And pass the horizon, 'til I can't even see you
Far from here
Where the beaches are wide
Just leave me your wake to remember you by

If you'll be my star
I'll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black
And you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine

But you can skyrocket away from me
And never come back if you find another galaxy
Far from here with more room to fly
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by

Stardust to remember you by

When daddy finished I fell asleep. Even now, just thinking of his voice make eyes flutter shut, my head resting back down on the pillow, falling back asleep....
