I sat at my vanity finishing up my makeup when I heard my door open. "Are you sure you are ready for this? You can hold off and wait if you want to." Dianna asked.
I sighed thinking to myself, 'Am I ready to go to school a new and face all ton of new people?'
"I will be okay." I replied closing my makeup case and slipping my shoes on.
She gave me a grave look. I could tell she wanted me to stay at the house longer, but I couldn't keep holed up in this room any longer.
"Well Benji is down by the door ready to go when you are. Marcus will be driving you to school. You have your phone if you need anything just walk out and call someone." She came over to me and gave me a hug, "I am so proud of you."
I smiled at her as she left. Once she was gone, I took a deep breath thinking myself through the day. 'It's just school. I can get through it. No one will even pay attention to me. Just one day and if it doesn't go well, I can just stop going.'
I walked downstairs, grabbing my bag on the way. Yelling bye on my way out, I grabbed Benji's leash and walked to the car to meet Marcus. He didn't say a word to me as we both got in the car and the entire way to school. It was about a ten minute drive until we pulled up to Ridgewood High School.
It didn't look too big so I shouldn't get lost. I tend to do that a lot. There were a couple students milling around the building, waiting for the first bell to ring. I got a couple courious looks when I got out and had a giant German Shepard by my side. Forgot that will attract attention.
I followed Marcus into the building and to what I assumed was the office. He came a few days ago to check out the school and the layout. When we entered the office I got a huge whiff of heavy perfume.
"Well hi there! Welcome to Ridgewood High! You must be Annie, its great to meet you!" A plump lady with a thick southern accent greeted us. "Let me grab your file and I will send you in to talk with Principle Smith." She handed Marcus a file and shooed us into a connecting door where a middle age, balding man sat at a large desk.
He looked up from his papers, and gave us a warm smile. "Hello Miss Thompson. I am principle Smith, it's a pleasure to meet you. I am going to make this quick because class will be starting here soon. When I was looking at your files, I saw how far advance you were in classes so we scheduled you mostly AP classes around some electives. You'll find your schedule in the file folder. If at any time you feel the need to get out of the room or feel too crowded, just leave. I have informed the teachers that you may need to leave on short notice so they won't mind. Do you have any questions?"
He talked so quickly I barely caught what he said, so I just shook my head, indicating no. He gave me a silent nod and spoke a few soft words to Marcus before dismissing us.
In the hallway, Marcus gave me a worried look. "If you need anything, I won't be far away. You know what Benji can do and he will keep you safe. Keep your phone on you at all times and if any teachers give you a hard time go to Principle Smith and he will take care of it. The teachers believe you have an anxiety disorder and that is why Benji is with you so go with it." As he finished the bell rang and students started filling up the hallway. "Have a great day Ann."
And he walked away, leaving me alone in a crowded hallway with just my dog.
