"I can't believe Jake set me up on a date" Una muttered as Rory drove. She didn't know whether to be angry or grateful. Normally Friday night is movie night at Rory's. Pajamas and snacks and old movies. Rory kept glancing at her with the frequency increasing the nearer they got to the mall. Jake picked the location based on Una's apparent fear of romantic settings. Una didn't mind because she figured if she and Brandy didn't hit it off, she and Rory could still do movie night.
As they drove Una thought about how good it was to have Rory in her life. The two of them have been friends for the majority of their lives. And as long as he was alive somewhere in this Universe she was never alone. She never felt lonely knowing that, no matter how far apart, he was always only a phone call away. More than that, he knew her. Inside and out. Every secret, every skeleton. And yet...he never judged her. He never looked down on her. He's never treated her with anything other than compassion and respect. A bonus is that he also is always honest with her, even if it hurts (something she needs to thrive and the only thing she truly respects). He is always the first to praise her, even for what she considered the smallest little things. Not to mention, they've been through so much together and shared so many things in common. Real things. Things that make up who we are as humans. She wondered how she could love him so much without her heart bursting. She was not her only friend, but he was her absolute very best friend. How could she even be so lucky to have such a beautiful friendship with someone so, well, beautiful.
"Feeling okay?" Rory asked, breaking the silence.
"Me? Oh, yeah. Fine! I'm fine. No, um, really... Im okay. I am." She stammered, trying more to convince herself than him. Honestly she was very nervous and a little afraid. Plus, because her nerves wouldn't allow it, she hadn't eaten since the night before which made things worse.
"(Rory's friend, Jake, whom through Emilia met Brandy) Jake says she's really nice."
"You've said that like ten times."
"Right" he looked at her and they both smiled a bit, then it fell quiet again for a few minutes.
"Is she a vegetarian or vegan," Una asked suddenly.
"What?"
"Is she a vegan?"
"Uh...I..."
"Because if she is" Una started before he could reply "I don't wanna order anything that has, you know, like animal stuff in it. Eggs or cheese or something."
"Oh. Um. Jake didn't say"
She sighed. She wasn't angry with him. She was trying not to let herself get anymore worked up than she already was. She was also trying desperately not to be bitchy from not eating. Her stomach lurched as they pulled into the parking lot. What if she doesn't like my hair, or my shoes, or my stupid sarcastic jokes? What if she hates my voice and my constant inane rambling? Una's thoughts raced and she looked in the side view mirror, patting herself lightly, smoothing her clothes.
"It's gonna be okay" Rory chimed in, hoping to ease her nerves "I mean it's not like a big deal or anything. She's just a person. If you don't like her just be polite but honest and you two go your separate ways. No harm, no foul. Right?" giving a light smile in hopes to coax Una out of her bubble of anxiety and self-criticism.
Just a person Una thought. That's the problem. Not because she believed all people were inherently bad, but she hadn't exactly had the best experiences when it came to interacting with other people. She tried to set her baggage aside. She didn't want to go into this with all her bad experiences with people looming over her. From her experience, people are capable of doing the most terrible things. She realized she wasn't anywhere near recovering from the mass of her past and certainly hadn't yet recovered from her last relationship. But she knew Rory was right. Besides, she knew she could trust him. He'd never let this happen if he had any inclination that she would be in any kind of peril.
