thanksgiving

you had woke up this morning with the thanksgiving vibes on your mind until you checked your phone to see texts and calls probably just to wish you a happy birthday. you even opened up instagram to see that you were tagged in posts for your special day. you stayed in bed for a good hour responding to everyone until jean came in singing happy birthday to you with a cake in hand.

"thank you, jean." you laughed as he sat the cake down on your desk. "but it's—"

"9am." you checked the time and rolled your eyes, dreading all the cooking and work you had to do today. yeah it was your birthday but it was also thanksgiving so you needed to make sure everything was right.

"you gon help me cook today or not?" you asked jean, getting up from your bed.

"i mean... i thought we were eating at mom's."

"we are but y'know she wants us to bring the mac and cheese and a dessert."

"okay well i'll do the mac and cheese—"

"no you won't, you'll do the dessert. is makayla coming to mama's?" he shrugged.

"she might stop by but she's having something with her family so i might leave. is connie going?"

"i'm sure he will but if he don't, that's fine too." you understood that he was probably just as busy as you were so you didn't expect a lot out of him today.

a little bit after you put the mac and cheese in the oven, there was a knock on your door. you opened it to see your mom and stepdad holding birthday balloons and bags of gifts.

"my baby..." alicia put the bags on the counter to bring you and jean into warm hugs. "feel like i haven't seen you in ages."

"you won't, she's a big girl now." michael joked as he went in for his hugs. "heard you got a lil boyfriend now too." you rolled your eyes and looked at jean with a face that could kill.

"ugh you sound like elliot."

"we know connie tho it's not a big deal. just don't want anyone to hurt you. y'know i still got the rifles in the shed—"
michael (stepdad) grew up in the south so that was all he's ever known until he met your mom, a city girl. no matter how long he's been there, his accent never strayed.

"nobody is shooting nobody. you cooking something in here?" your mom walked in the kitchen and opened the oven. "i taught you real good. smells good in here."

"yeah jean is supposed to be making the honey bun cake but he's dragging his behind." you were raised not to cuss around adults that were much older especially your parents. "talking to his girlfriend."

"she's not my girlfriend."

"you mean makayla? had a feeling they were back together."

"they are but he don't wanna say it. he brings her home every day almost."

"finally. i hope one of you gives us grandkids soon." you knew they weren't talking about you so you looked at jean.

"i'll leave that up to eli and liz."

time had passed and you got dressed on the way to your mom's. you hoped the day went as planned because you knew that even though events like thanksgiving opened doors for family reunion and togetherness, it could also open doors for drama.
