Chapter 6
"Your stupid cat won't stay still." Juliette groaned as she tossed one of her brushes into the box beside her. "Hey, did you hear me? I called your cat is stupid." She huffed when I didn't give her a response, lobbing a color streaked tissue in my direction. I miraculously caught it with one hand without looking up from the highlighted pages spread out before me.
"So you've said the past ten times." I mentioned with a knowing smile, finally giving my best friend the attention she wanted.
"Tell him to stop moving Char." She whined, plopping down and joining me criss-crossed on my bed.
"Bushels, bad kitty." I half heartedly scolded at the feline currently sprawled backside on top of her tower licking her paws.
"Thanks so much. What would I have done without you." Juliette spoke sarcastically with a deadpan look and I couldn't but laugh.
"I know, I'm such great help." I dramatically flipped my hair in her face, still collapsing in giggles.
"You're unbelievable, that's what you are."
"But you still love me."
"Only because you provide me a cat to paint for my end of semester portfolio and you feed me Harbio every time I come over."
"All I am to you is my pet and gummy bears?"
"What else are you useful for?"
"Damn, the truth hurts."
"But you still love me." She recited back my words with a cheeky tone.
"Hardly."
"So how's the book going?" Her eyes widened in curiosity as she perched her elbows on her knees, awaiting for my response.
"Stressful. I honestly cannot wait until this semester is over so I can solely focus on it for a month."
"And Wesley?" Jules quickly muttered under her breath, trying to cover it with a suspicious whistle.
"What?"
"Oh nothing." She twirled a strand of her hair to emphasize her innocence, but the smirk on her face was a dead giveaway.
"Wesley and I are just friends."
"Oh c'mon you and I both know that's a lie. From what you've told me about him, he clearly doesn't think so nor does he want to be and neither do you."
"Jules, it just couldn't work even if I did like him. He's too engrossed in his band as I am with my writing. There's no time for anything, especially a relationship." I sighed.
"Are you honestly telling me right now you have not felt anything other than platonic towards Wes ever since you met him?"
"No comment." I subconsciously replied before I could stop myself. Instead of elaborating, I attempted to throw myself back into revisions, yet it was short lived as my papers were snatched by a very eager girl.
"You cannot just say no comment to a question about liking someone and expect me to just accept it."
"I don't like him Juliette. There, happy?"
"You don't like him or you can't?" I knew exactly where this conversation was going. What I didn't know was whether or not I wanted to have it at this moment.
"Both." I spoke softly after a few silent beats, my voice slowly drowning in fleeting flashbacks.
"Oh Char." Juliette looked at me sadly before scooting closer and wrapping her arms around me in a warm embrace. "He was a long time ago, and that's just it. He's your past. He doesn't belong in your present, much less your future. Don't make room for someone who doesn't belong in your life anymore. Allow yourself to let go. From all your fears and ghosts. From him. And when you have done that, allow your own heart to open up and to reach out for someone who quite possibly might be extremely good for you."
