It takes three doorbell rings to snap Gauri out of her trance on the sofa after finishing Maggi straight from the cooking pan. She lazily opens the wooden main door. There's an additional metal grill door in between. Amarnath stands outside.
Gauri's face shuts over. She doesn't open the metal door.
'You won't even let me in?' he asks in a low voice.
'I don't think so.'
'Your parents might hear u... '
'They aren't home. What is it?'
'Baat karni hai.'
She shrugs. 'I can hear you.'
'There's ... a lot to say.'
'Oh, you're gonna speak two sentences? Or, oh my god, is it gonna be three??!' her voice stings.
Amarnath continues to look at her through earnest, tired eyes.
'Fine, I'll sit,' she flops down on the floor, beside the door. Amarnath stands rooted to the spot like he is incapable of movement.
'I'm waiting,' Gauri calls out. 'Don't waste my time.'
Amarnath swallows. He looks at the floor, back at the shut door, and turns around. He sits down too, leaning against the outer wall.
'Gauri ... Michael's wedding is not the first time I saw you,' he says.
Gauri blinks, her shoulders straightening. She turns to the door in surprise.
'I'd seen you at Shivaji Park police station three days before that. I was there when you spoke to the SI. The way you spoke, so confidently and clearly ... I'd never seen someone like you. I've loved you from that day itself.'
Gauri's lips part softly at his words, her eyes travelling up and down the metal door.
'I've never spoken to girls, Gauri. Maybe once or twice in college, to borrow notes or a pencil. But with you, it was different. I wanted to see you again. I wanted to hear your voice again and again. I wanted to hear you say my name again ... I was scared to talk to you, but I couldn't stay without talking to you either ... '
A little smile emerges on Gauri's lips. She rests her head against the wall, drawing her legs close to her chest.
'Every second when I'm not involved in work, you're the only person I think about ... it's always you, Gauri ... ' Amarnath says.
I know that Amar, her heart screams. I know.
'Pata hain? When we met for the second time, in the Willingdon Club, you asked me if I'd had breakfast. That time ... ' Amarnath's eyes fill up. '... y-you reminded me of my mother, Gauri ... '
Tears fill up Gauri's eyes.
'You're the gift god has given me after twenty years. I'll not lose you at any cost,' he says quickly. 'I don't know if I can live without you. But ... I-I don't want to live without you, Gauri ... I don't want to go back to that life I had before I met you ... '
Gauri tilts her head, looking at the door, crying silently.
'I'll not hide anything from you, Gauri,' he turns to the door with blurry eyes. 'I'll tell you everything! I know I've hurt you a lot, Gauri. I'll never do that again. "Sorry" is a very small thing to say for what I've done, but I don't know what else to do ... I'm sorry; please forgive me Gauri ... please ...'
Amarnath waits for a response. But there is nothing.
'Gauri ... are you listening?' he asks softly.
She nods silently, dashing her tears away. Amarnath runs his hands over his face, breathing out. He turns to the door again.
