"Doc, your patient just woke up"
"Ohh, snap...thanks Vuyo, I'm coming just now"
Well, I was not really myself that day. Imagine having to be at work the same night a stranger bumped into your car then ran...a hit and run, life can be so rude sometimes but atleast my car was not that bad.
"Is there anything else I need to sign Lisa?"
"No ma'am" she replied with a smile
"Lisa, I told you you can call me Chloe, or atleast call me Doc"
Lisa was the new receptionist after Lesedi was dismissed from work because she had an affair with the Hospital Superintendent. I left the reception then headed to ward 7, where my special patient was kept, when I got in, he was being assisted by two nurses to sit as the place pillows behind him to balance him.
"Whoa!Whoa!Whoa!Careful! Guys!you could break him."
They excused me immediately as I was staring at them with my eyes wide open. I took his file then went through it, finally...he was awake.
"How long have I been here?" Slowly, I turned to him with a smile.
"Hi, Chris, I'm Doctor Simela...Chloe Simela. You have been here for 2 months and three days now" I could see the confusion in his eyes.
"Do you still remember what happened, do you still remember where you come from, anything?Maybe..." He interrupted
" Look Doc, I still remember everything that happened that day, where's my sister? How come I've been here for so long?Damn! "
"Chris, I need you to calm down." For a moment, silence dwelled in the ward then I could tell by the look on his face that he knew. He buried his face in his hands.
"I'm so sorry Chris."
"No, I should get out of this bed right now and ..."
"Chris,no. That is a bad idea...." I tried to stop him because he did not know what he was doing. I got emotional, Chris was so frustrated, innocent looking and I always had hope that he'd wake up.
"Why can't I feel my legs?" That was my fear. When he asked me that question, I knew it was time for me to tell him that it was possible that he could not walk anymore.
