Charlotte's POV

It feels like I’ve been hit by a truck. Groaning in pain, I clutch my head and slowly open my eyes, adjusting to the light. From what I can tell, I’m in a hospital room.

“Look who’s finally awake,” comes a voice from my right. I turn my head slowly and see Isabella sitting on a chair, giving me a warm smile.

“What happened?” I ask, my voice hoarse.

“You passed out from dehydration and lack of sleep. You’ve been asleep for two days,” she explains.

“Two days? How is that even possible?” I question, incredulous.

Isabella shrugs, “I don’t know. The doctor gave you fluids, so you should be okay now.”

I nod and close my eyes for a moment. When I open them, I sit up in the hospital bed and look around the room. “You look different,” I comment, and Isabella raises an eyebrow.

“How so?”

“Your smile reaches your eyes,” I observe. Her eyes widen, clearly taken aback that I noticed the subtle difference in her smile. She does look different though, she looks happier.

“How’s Engfa?” I ask. Her smile grows even wider, and I tilt my head, confused by her reaction. Isabella stands up and comes closer to the bed.

“She’s awake. She wanted to come see you, but the doctors wouldn’t let her,” Isabella reveals. The moment I hear those words, I quickly get up from the bed and pull out the IV from my arm. The sudden movement makes me dizzy, and I clutch my head.

“Whoa, easy,” Isabella says, holding my arm to steady me. I shake off her hold and rush out the door, heading straight to Engfa’s room. When I reach her room, the door is open, but I’m not in the doorway, so no one inside can see me. My heart stops when I hear her voice.

“Can I please have a strawberry milkshake?” Engfa asks.

I peek in and see her talking to a nurse. I cover my mouth to muffle my cries.

“No,” the nurse replies curtly.

“Why not?” Engfa whines, “There’s strawberries in the milkshake. That’s protein or whatever.”

“For the millionth time, you can’t have anything in case we need to do an emergency surgery,” the nurse responds, visibly annoyed.

Engfa still hasn’t noticed me. I take this moment to admire her. “Are you new here? You must be. Last time I was here, I was allowed to have a strawberry milkshake.”

The nurse ignores her, not responding.

“You’re a mean nurse,” Engfa pouts. “First, you don’t let me see my girlfriend, and now I can’t have a strawberry milkshake.”

The nurse rolls her eyes. “You’re annoying,” she mutters.

“Thank you. You know, strawberry milkshakes used to be the love of my life, but that changed when I met my girlfriend,” Engfa continues.

The nurse starts moving around the room, ignoring her. “I’m bored. Can I keep the bullets you took out of me? It would be cool to have them. I want to frame them. Not that I liked getting shot or anything, but still, it would be cool.”

“You’re extremely annoying,” the nurse sighs.

Engfa ignores her and continues, “Have you heard the joke about camping and sex?” She doesn’t wait for a response. “It’s fucking in tents.”

I chuckle softly, but the nurse doesn’t say anything. “You know, in tents... intense.”

The nurse turns away, trying to hide a smile. I chuckle again but jump slightly when someone touches my shoulder from behind.
