'...I'm such a fool.'
Effie's words, like an echo between a mountain range, reverberated in the back of my mind.
"What, you don't believe me?" her teasing voice made my face heat up. How badly I wanted to punch her right now.
The drumming sounds of what Kai had called music shook the walls and floor of this establishment. I stared at the people dancing from the varanda of our private room, not because I was curious about how easily they could let go of their worries, but because I couldn't muster up the courage to look at Sunny.
"Let's ask him ourselves, shall we?" she continued, oblivious to my inner turmoil. "Sunny, are you Mongrel?"
I could sense how the shadows moved and stirred, blackening out the raving lights of this distasteful club. He was barely holding himself back by a thread, I could tell. I had no doubt he would bring these walls down if Effie pushed any further.
"Yes," his response after a long moment.
From the corner of my eye, her smug gleam was almost audible. I knew it was my fault -- hell, if I was being honest with myself, I already knew the truth. I wasn't stupid. I suspected Sunny to be Mongrel from the very start. But that didn't mean I wanted confirmation. Not now. Not when I was already so far past my breaking-point.
Her mouth opened, no doubt intending to say something sly again. She had been rubbing her body up against strangers for the past hours, after all. There were no boundaries she wouldn't cross after doing something that audacious, I thought. In this club, she was in her element. And we were all her playthings.
"I'll need to use the bathroom," so I excused myself before she could act on her instincts.
Turning my back to them, still not so much as glancing at Sunny, I focused on keeping my walk steady. The shadows around me were restless. The burnt smell of charred air expelled out of me just the same.
"O-oh, seems princess is in a mood," her amused voice sounded small halfway across the room. Still, even unaccustomed to my new ascended hearing abilities, little escaped me. "You better go after her, eh?"
The wall cracked when I shut the door behind me. My hurried steps traversed hallways and rounded corners in a disoriented manner. I didn't know where I was going. It didn't matter. I just needed to escape. Needed to get away from that awkward situation. It wasn't good for me.
My mental health was at stake -- these past few weeks had been so swell to it. To replenish my humanity. I thought I could get used to this. The Sovereigns? Screw them. If I could stay in this blissful impasse for just a couple days longer, I wouldn't mind ceasing to care about humanity. I had already done enough. I was already the world's star of hope.
Why must she have gone and ruined it all?
I turned yet another corner and spotted the ladies' room. With agitation I busted past the door. A group of girls, about my age, clothed in dresses much too short, were huddled up in front of the mirror, taking selfies and videos, being silly.
"Out!" I beckoned with a powerful voice. They startled, then froze. A phone dropped. "Now!"
Scared for their safety, they left in a hurry. Not even bothering to pick up their device.
I walked up and leaned against the basin. Taking a deep sigh, I looked myself over in the mirror. The face in the reflection seemed so different. With the charm Sunny lent me, my hair was back to its original color, but my face was so much more mature. Much older, but much more beautiful, too. Those couldn't surely just be the side-effects of ascending, I thought.
