"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride"
I smile at my TV screen. It was probably the millionth time I watched my wedding film, but I couldn't get over it. I loved it so much, it was such a special moment for me. I would always watch it alone because for some reason my husband, Elijah, always seemed uncomfortable watching it. I never understood why, he would even try to convince me to not watch it. So that's why I view it when no one is home. Me, my wine and my wedding film. But now I feel like something is off....? I've been home alone for too long. Wait, where's my husband..? Where's my son? I quickly jump up from the couch and snatch my phone from the coffee table. It's 5:53 PM, Elijah and Maxwell are almost two hours late. They should be home by now? I open my messages and see that my husband hasn't messaged me at all. I dial his number and wait for him to pick up
"Hello?"
"Honey, where are you?"
"Huh? I'm at work, Y/N." He said, his voice dripping with fatigue.
"Elijah, do you mean to tell me that you're STILL at work? As in you did not pick up our son?!""Huh?! What? It's..my turn??" I hear him jump of from his chair
"It has been 2 hours Elijah. Today is YOUR day to pick up Maxwell."
"Oh. Uhhh, I'm- I'm sorry. But baby I'm reallly busy right now- do you think-"
"You want me to pick up Max?" I cut him off with annoyance in my tone. "Fine. It isn't the first time anyway."
I hang up on Elijah and throw on my coat and boots. This isn't the first time that Elijah doesn't pick up Max from school. I know he forgets, but he never wants to admit it. He always says that he's either in an important meeting or he's super busy. I start my Mercedes Maybach and hope that he isn't freezing in this rain. I arrive at the school and see Maxwell waiting at the bus stop, he looks like he was about to bus home.
-"Max!!" I honk my horn to get his attention. I jump out the car and hug him "I'm so sorry, baby. Come in the car"
-"Mom, where's dad? The teachers were so worried for me!" My 14 year old said to me, his clothes and hair were dripping with water.
-"I know I know, I'm so sorry, baby. A lot of stuff happened. Are you cold? Are you okay?"
As I try to comfort my clearly disappointed and uncomfortable son, I hear a light tap on the the window. A redhead with green eyes and holding a big black umbrella over her head was waiting for me to roll down the window for me to talk to her. I was already so mad at Eli, and this lady was going to piss me off even more. I roll my eyes and whisper I silent prayer as my finger slides onto the switch. The quiet hum of the window rolling down fills up the air and the warm rain starts dripping inside the vehicle.
-"Yes?"
-"Hello there! I'm Ms. Watson, Max's teach-"
I cut her off arrogantly "I know who you are. Is there a problem?"
-"Well." She says softly, a little stunned from her getting cut off "I don't have any kids of my own but I imagine being a parent is hard. And days like these, I've been waiting after school with little Max here for an hour, just waiting for one of his parents to arrive! But today I noticed that your arrival was extremely late..."
-"Look Ms. Watson, I'm sorry. It's-its hard. And we've been trying to be in time to get him with our busy schedules"
-"I'm sure you are. But unfortunately for you, you'll have to pay a fine."
I looked at the teacher with complete fury. She cannot be serious. But I'm not even really mad at Ms. Watson, im mad at my irresponsible 444 month old husband. I take a deep breath and look into her glowing green eyes.
