(TW: Mental Insanity/illness)

Innocent or Guilty?: Defense

My client is insane as he had said, "It is impossible to say how first the idea entered [his] brain; but once conceived, it haunted [him] day and night" (pg. 1). He is insane and should get a lesser punishment. He should stay in a mental institution instead of being sent to a prison.

Other evidence held is, "For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye!...Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees" (pg. 1). My client had no desire for any of the old man's money, but to rid of the old man's eye. The old man's eye disturbed him very much. My client said that the old man's eye vexed him very much, and wanted to rid of it completely, thus murdering the old man.

My client can hear things and see things many others cannot. "I did not hear him lie down. He was still sitting up in the bed listening" (pg. 2). If he was not insane, he wouldn't have seen the old man listening. He did not hear the old man lie back down. He could hear, however, whenever the old man did lie back down to once again return to sleep. To conclude, my client is insane, and innocent, but should still be put in a mental institution.
