General Zaroff and Rainsford: Comparisons and Contrasts
General Zaroff and Rainsford do not seem very similar. They seem more like polar opposites. While when they met, they chat and have a very fine dinner, Zaroff has a little game that he would've liked to play with Rainsford. He told Rainsford, "But may I not venture to suggest you will find my idea of sport more diverting than Ivan's?" (542-543). Indicating that while Rainsford has a choice to play the game, the right answer would be to play the game instead of Ivan's game, because it is a bit more 'diverting' than Ivan's sport.
Now while there are certain things they have in common, Rainsford and General Zaroff are two very different people. They both have more contrasts than comparisons, making them more of polar opposites than similarities. In event of new people coming about, Rainsford is a bit more caring, respectful, kind, and trustworthy. Like Rainsford, General Zaroff is kind, but until a certain point. When that certain point is hit, he's still somewhat kind, but he makes people do things or play games that they do not want to do or play. "'Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.'" (381-382). Rainsford was not one to like Zaroff's game, as of early in the story. Rainsford definitely was not the one Zaroff should have played games with.
