Missing Person Police Report: Fortunato
INITIAL CALL:
Fortunato (an adult male) had gone missing and was presumed dead by the police. The police dogs had sniffed around a wall under Montresor, Mr. Fortunato's friend's house in his catacombs. Mr. Montresor has denied claims against killing Fortunato. Fortunato was last seen wearing, "...motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells" (23-25). He was last seen in Italy, during Carnival. He was last seen with Mr. Montresor, drinking alcoholic beverages in Montresor's home. Possible suspects are Montresor himself. There is no other evidence of another suspect or potential suspect. Fortunato was a rich man who did not go out much. He liked to sit around in his home and not do much more.
FORENSIC REPORT:
There was evidence of blood coming from a wall. The police dogs found the blood in the catacombs, coming from that exact wall. The police were suspecting he was in the wall, but still looked around for clues as to where Fortunato could have been hidden by his murderer. Possible murder weapons include a dull torch, a lit torch, piles of bones, and a, "quantity of building stone and mortar" (170-171). Both the building stone and mortar had Montresor's fingerprints. Piles of bones, as well as both torches, have the same fingerprints as the stone and mortar. There was no other evidence of Fortunato's murder. The police still have reason to suspect Montresor.
CONCLUSION:
The police have not found the body, but the police dogs have been sniffing a wall a concerning amount of times, leading them to think that Fortunato died by being made into the wall. The subject has been identified as the 'friend' of Fortunato's, Montresor. In conclusion, Mr. Fortunato was slightly intoxicated, but he was not intoxicated enough to where he did not know what was happening to him, as the intoxication wore off almost immediately. Fortunato died due to no oxygen in a wall and was lured into the catacombs just for his 'friend' to kill him. Montresor was interrogated and told an officer, "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge" (1-2). Montresor accepted the claims of murder, was arrested, and then Montresor was put under the death penalty.
