Prompt: One of the most important cultural values in The Odyssey is xenia, a Greek word for hospitality, generosity, or courtesy shown to those who are far from home. Where do you see this? Why do you think hospitality was held in such high regard in Homer's time? In what ways is this value still applicable today?

One of the most important values in The Odyssey is hospitality. Hospitality is shown when Calypso takes Odysseus on her island and keeps him captive, still fed, watered, bathed, etc. When Calypso takes him in, she tries to make him her husband. She wants him to love her, but because he's married, that would be unfaithful to his wife, Penelope. Calypso then gets a message from Hermes saying that she has to let him go after a fruitful 7 years. Because she was told that it was not Odysseus' fate to die on her island, she let him go back home. Hospitality was held in such high regard because it was an Ancient Greek Value. Ancient Greek Values show honorary regards. It is still applicable today when people throw parties, when one takes in a homeless man/woman and feeds, waters, and bathes them, or just helps people at all. Helping people shows hospitality, and if you show hospitality in Greece (then and now), you will be honored by many and many to come.
