After finishing up at the workshop, Evan helped Raine close up until the next day. Usually, Raine would do the week's payroll on Thursdays and pay Evan then. But a sudden garage door malfunction diverted their attention, and after twenty minutes of tinkering, Morgan remembered about the payment as he was closing the door.
"Damn garage" said mechanic, "Come to my place, I'll pay you out of pocket after dinner."
The Morgans' house was just a two-minute walk from the workshop, at the end of the street. Evan didn't know who in the Raine family had built the house and workshop, but the decision to buy two small plots instead of large one was very wise. The constant noise from the workshop would disturb the residents of the house, as well as the neighbors. It must have been easier to buy real estate here in the past. Or maybe the Morgans had acquired two plots back in the golden days of Amber Hill, when there was money to live on and they didn't have to work for food.
Raine and Nova always had a cozy home. Having lost their childhood early, they tried to create their own little paradise in their shack, with their own hands, without relying on anyone. Despite the help from the Kennedy family, they did a great job on their own. It was always clean, everything worked, and it was decorated with various cute little things. Evan loved visiting them. Here, unlike his own home, he was welcome.
Nova had already returned from work and was cooking dinner. Hearing her brother come home, she came out into the hallway.
"Hi. Oh, little!" the girl, seeing Evan, hugged him tightly and kissed him on the cheek. She always jokingly called him "little one," which contrasted greatly with his height.
"Hi, Nova," Evan happily hugged the girl, and, stepping back, looked into her magical obsidian eyes. She and her brother were very similar, especially in their eyes. It was easy to succumb to the hypnosis of this gaze when talking to them.
"You look exhausted, are you tired? Were there a lot of cars?"
"Few cars, the door broke down at the end of the shift," Raine replied instead of Evan, "I'll go fix it early tomorrow morning."
"Serious breakdown?"
"I'll figure it out. Don't worry. Better feed the kid, he's hungry as a wolf. And me too, to be honest."
"Come on, little. I made cheese soup, and something else delicious," Nova invited Evan to the table, and ran to the stove herself to remove the already cooked dishes. Evan was really hungry. It was just the right time for dinner. Usually, he managed to drop by the diner after work and grab something to go. After all, there was never any certainty that there would be anything to eat at home. His perpetually drunk father hadn't been near the stove for about four years. And Gloria cooked simply disgustingly.
Raine joined them at the table. Nova served the cheese soup in cute light blue plates, and put a large dish of baked mushrooms with potatoes on the table. Evan ate with gusto, and from the first spoonfuls his mood improved significantly. The delicate creamy soup warmed his stomach and heart.
"Sometimes I'm ready to sell my soul for your dinner," Evan groaned contentedly, gobbling up the soup.
"Thank you, I always worry so much about this soup! One mistake, and I've messed up completely! But this time it really turned out perfect!"
"Very tasty," Raine agreed, "Is there any salad? Don't get up, I'll look myself."
"It's already gone bad, and I threw it out. I'll make a new one tomorrow," Nova was also eating actively, clearly hungry after work. The girl worked as a painter on a construction site. She painted walls and, from time to time, decorated interiors. The work brought in income, but took up a lot of time.
