"Why didn't you tell me?" Ma strides down in sure steps. I see her tired eyes as she comes to a halt infront of us.
"Ma..." Aman looks at me for help and I swallow nervously.
"Tell me." She questions crossing her arms over her chest.
"I am sor-" Aman starts but Ma talks over him.
"I mean what didn't you want to tell me?" She asks looking between us.
We both blow out a relieved breath at the same time. She narrows her eyes at us suspiciously.
"You two are hiding something!" She gasps dramatically like Aman, and I chuckle.
Good. She didn't hear our conversation then.
"It's nothing Ma." Aman walks towards the sink and washes his hands and I do the same.
"Don't you nothing me Mann!" She follows us.
"Ma... it's..." I think about what to say. She would find out if we lied so I go with a white lie.
"You know Ma, we arrived from US before the week ended right?" She nods and narrows her eyes.
I look at Aman and he scratches his head, "It was... because..." He glances at me to finish that sentence and I shrug.
"It was because I got a call from my office?" I look at Aman when Ma blows out a breath.
"Will you both finish the sentence without swallowing the half of the words." She looks between us expectantly.
"Right!" Aman snaps his finger like an idea struck him.
"It was because Heer got a work promotion!" He nods growing confident, "She got a promotion to move to LA." He says and I open and close my mouth.
Ma has grown still as she looks at both of us and I twist my fingers nervously.
After a few minutes of crickets silence Aman's face falls in realization. This was not our plan. We never planned to tell Ma about my promotion.

"What do you mean?" Ma whispers and looks at me like she's heartbroken at the idea.
