The next day at school, (Y/N) was currently sitting through the last lesson of the day, her foot tapping against the linoleum floor while her arms folded over her desk. And as soon as the bell rang, she packed up rather quickly so she could move towards the gate to meet up with Light, he already waiting for her to walk home together."Hey, Light," she waved with a bright smile. "Thanks for waiting."
"Of course," he pushed himself off of the wall he was leaning against so they could walk side-by-side. "It would be rather boring walking by myself contrary to being able to converse with you."
"You flatter me."
"That's what I'm aiming for," he flashed her a rather charming smile that made her stiffen.
Damn.
He really is good-looking.
"Anyways, mind if I come over to study and have some dinner?" She cleared her throat, trying to shake herself of her rather distracting thoughts. "I was hoping for another one of your mother's home cooked meals. They're very good."
"I don't mind in the least," Light shook his head as they stepped up to his door.
He touched the handle.
Then he frowned.
"Something wrong?"
"No, I'm just surprised that no one is home yet," he said as he took out his key and smoothly proceeded to unlock the door, slipping his shoes off—as did (Y/N)—before heading upstairs to his room, touching the handle and immediately sensing something was off.
But, since (Y/N) was there, he couldn't investigate exactly what.
Deciding not to dwell on whomever had been in his room, he focused his sights on studying with (Y/N) as she had asked. It was obvious enough to him that she was extremely intellectual, understanding everything immediately after he explained it. Usually, it would take some amount of time and practice, yet with her, it was the exact opposite. He wondered why someone so unusual yet gifted like her sought out help from him, and the most conclusive answer he could think about was the obvious: she's curious about me.
Why, though, is the question.
She couldn't have figured out that I am Kira, for I have been far too cautious.
It can't be as vain as appearances.
So, what?
The hours passed by with Light asking himself that exact question, somehow simultaneously though keeping his attention on the main task of studying. And unknown to him, the entire time he was helping (Y/N), the two of them were being watched through ministers carefully hidden around select spots of the room. And currently, two individuals were watching the students from a darkened but luxurious hotel room.
One of the individuals was Soichiro.
The other, his appearance finally revealed, was L. He sat on his chair with his knees folded to his chest, his thumb to his mouth that allowed him to chew on the cuticle. He wore a pair of loose-fitting jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt that looked casual next to Soichiro. Not only that, but his disheveled raven hair stuck out from his head in wavy strands, covering his obsidian eyes that were accentuated by the dark shadows below, something that stood out even more due to his pale skin.
Both were focused on Light, since he was the intended target of surveillance, but what L found most interesting was the dynamic between him and (Y/N)—their unusual friendship struck at him.
"I can't believe I'm allowing you to spy on my son," Soichiro exhaled softly, clearly tired.
"The FBI that I had tailing your son, along with several other families, unveiled nothing, so I had to take it a step further," L merely replied in that rather monotone voice he had, his dark eyes still pinned to the screen. "Besides, with this method, we can unveil secrets that maybe he does not wishes for us to know about. To just study after school is so... obvious. Too... contrived."
"Hey! That's my son you're talking about," Soichiro snapped back at the man. "Are you honestly telling me that you suspect him?"
"I do suspect him. That's why I placed wiretaps and surveillance cameras in your house and the Deputy Director's house," L pressed his thumb further against his lips as he continued to watch Light and (Y/N), their interactions rolling around in his mind until he had to speak on the topic. "Mr. Yagami... how long have you known Miss (L/N)?"
"Not long," Soichiro leaned forwards as he laced his finger together. "I met her for the first time a month ago. But she and Light have been friends for a while before that. Why do you ask?"
"She was also a suspect that the FBI followed," L revealed, shocking the other.
"What!? Why?" The older man pressed as he blinked at L, completely puzzled by his actions. "She has absolutely no connections to the police."
"You're correct in that instance, but there are too many coincidences around her that can't be ignored," L revealed. "She moved here recently, made immediate friends with your son, and is gifted intellectually. I'm sure she could easily hack into your computer and access files that are classified if she so desired to."
"That's not possible," Soichiro shook his head. "She wouldn't be able to bypass all of my security without leaving a trace."
"People can surprise you," L hummed, placing his thumb to his lip in concentration. "We should keep a very close eye on her."
"...fine," Soichiro finally agreed. "I understand."
"I'm glad that you do."
