The three pony kinds were divided into a rivalry which lasted for centuries after Twilight Sparkle's reign. Their wars began the creation of a new species, ghost ponies. They don't necessarily have a gender.
They can turn invisible and phase through objects such as doors or walls. They can also make hybrids with the other pony kinds. They are usually not welcome in neither Zephyr Heights, Bridlewood, nor Maretime Bay.
The Pegasi can fly, reaching in high places other ponies cannot. They are usually selfish, spoiled, and bratty. The Unicorns can use magic with their horns, lifting anything they want. The Earth Ponies usually work with the farms and food.
Ghost ponies have horns like unicorns but it doesn't do anything. They are currently in hiding as we speak as the other pony kinds love to bully them and kill them off, calling them outcasts, weak, worthless etc.
However, the hybrids stay with their according mothers or fathers. If their father is a Pegasus, and their mom was a ghost, they would stay with their father. Just like that. Just like Shadow here, who's mom is an earth pony and their dad is a ghost pony.
Shadow is a descendant of Sombra and Luna AKA Nightmare Moon. They're living with the earth ponies in Maretime Bay, where earth ponies live. They're mostly the only ghost pony there, so they get bullied... a lot.
They're close with Hitch Trailblazer and Sunny Starscout, two earth ponies from Maretime Bay. Right now the cute little fillies are playing a pony game, and Sprout ruined the entire thing. "It's all wrong! The ponies are supposed to get along, remember?" scolded Sunny, glaring at Sprout.
"Booooring!" groaned Sprout. Shadow glanced at Hitch and he glanced back. Shadow jerked their head to the back of them and Hitch nodded as they both backed away from the argument. "It's like in the olden times when ponies were friends," corrected Sunny.
"Ughh, here we go again." groaned Sprout and Shadow in unison, although the latter facepalmed themselves and the former did not. "And they never used their magic against each other." explained Sunny. "You're wrong!" accused Sprout.
"No, I'm not!" argued Sunny. "My mom says the Pegasi and unicorns tried to eat up all the Earth ponies by zapping 'em with lasers and and frying them to a crisp." explained Sprout. "They wouldn't do that!" shouted Sunny.
"So the Earth ponies kicked their butts in an epic battle, and if they ever try to come back into Maretime Bay, we'll kick their butts again!" continued Sprout, ignoring Sunny's arguments. "Those are lies! Hitch, Shadow, tell him!" accused Sunny.
Shadow turned invisible and Hitch glared at them. "Coward," He hissed before turning to his arguing friends.
"Well, uh, that is kinda what our teacher said in history class, but... hey, oh, we could play this game your way if you want, Sunny. I don't mind." explained Hitch.

"Well, I do. It's a boring game. Ooh! Let's play 'Pegasus Barbecue' instead!" suggested Sprout. "Sprout, stop it!" ordered Sunny. "Earth pony burgers!" shouted Sprout. "Im going to tell my dad!" stated Sunny, going to get her father, Argyle Starshine.
"What have you done, Sprout? You've put us all in danger." sighed Shadow, coming out of their invisibility mode and smiling teasingly. "Horn fight~!" yelled Sprout. "You're going to break them!" warned Sunny.
"Take that, earth pony! Pew, pew!" replied Hitch. "Dad, tell them that's not what they do!" ordered Sunny. Shadow sheepishly smiled at Argyle and turned invisible again. "How does that feel? Pew-pew!" Hitch laughed.
"Time to head on home, don't you think, colts?" suggested Argyle. "Ugh, fine! Pew-pew! Pew!" groaned Sprout. "Oh no! My brains are melting!" lied Hitch. The door opens, revealing Sprout and Hitch's mom and Shadow's as well.
"Shadow Ghosthoof!! You should know not to trot off, especially here." scolded their Mom as did Sprout and Hitch's. "Sorry Mom, it's just that Sunny wanted me to play with her and insisted." apologized Shadow.
"Why is that again, Phyllis and Annalise?" asked Argyle. "Because you are brainwashing their minds with all of your...uh, nonsense." answered Phyllis. "It's called research, Phyllis. And by the way, I leave all the brainwashing to you. Unicorn cupcakes?"
"🎶Freshly baked~" sang Sunny. "You're an Earth pony, Argyle. Act like one, especially for her sake." reminded Annalise, Shadow's mother. "Who does he think he is, talking to me like that? That pony is trouble." scolded Phyllis.
"He's been at this since we were young, Phyllis; just humor him, that's all I do." reminded Annalise. "Don't worry, Mommy and Aunt Annalise! When I become sheriff, I'll keep everypony in line!" promised Sprout.
"Sheriff Sprout. Huh, it does have a certain ring to it." agreed Phyllis. Annalise turned to her colt and they stuck their tongue out at Sprout. Annalise giggled before they both trotted home and away from Argyle's home.
