"So what kind of case is this anyway?" Kenzie asked as we headed down town.
"Oh you know. The usual" Emmet shrugged.
"I don't know what the usual means with you" she sighed. He just laughed fullheartedly.
"Where will be the surprise if I tell you?"
"I don't like surprises"
"Everyone likes surprises. Birthday surprises are especially the best" Dana insisted.
Kenzie shook her head but still smiled at Dana's innocence. "Not me. Don't get me wrong, birthday's are great! I love birthdays. But surprises..." Kenzie cringed at the thought.
"Her mom threw her a surprise party once and she didn't come out of her room for a week" Ash informed them.
"You're a weird girl, Kenzie" Emmet stated.
"I just like knowing and being aware..."
"Well when you're working with me and Dana you should expect the unexpected" he grinned. That gave Kenzie an unsettling feeling in her stomach.
"Why are we going to the old cannery?" she continued to ask anyway, refusing to give into their "surprise tactic".
"You ask too many questions...how'd you know we were going there anyway?" Emmet wondered, nervous that he was caught red handed.
"She has the whole map of the town memorized" Ash informed him.
"That's really weird..."
"Stop calling me weird" she shoved Emmet.
"Okay, okay" he laughed and picked up the pace and they followed.
Kenzie noticed how Emmet was able to avoid her original question but she didn't push. She may have not liked not knowing the real objective but she trusted Emmet with everything she had. He may be reckless and arrogant and impulsive but he was always loyal and trustworthy.
They finally reached the old cannery and with Emmet in the lead they walked in cautiously. "This building has been abandoned for years...why would the school send us here?" Kenzie wondered aloud.
Then, something in her clicked. "Emmet..."
He cringed at the tone of her voice. "What's going on?" she demanded.
He turned to face her. "Keep your pants on. Ash told me you wanted to go on an exciting mission so I found you one. You should be grateful" he told her as he looked around the place in search of something.
Both Kenzie and Dana furrowed their eyebrows. "This mission is for three stars, Emmet. We're only one!" Kenzie advanced on him but Ash spun quickly to hold her back.
"Calm down, Kenzie" he warned.
"Why? We could get in big trouble for this. And it's dangerous"
"Since when has risk kept you from defending the peace?" he mocked her a little. "Come on, we both know you could use a break from school and just have a little fun" he smirked at his Partner, pleased with knowing her better than anyone else.
"Rules are made for a reason, Ash" she sighed.
"Rules are also made to be broken" he countered.
She gave him a look as if to say, Yeah, coming from the rebellious teenager who ran away from home. He just rolled his eyes at her, able to see the words written on her face.
"Come on, Kenz. Just live a little" Emmet grinned.
"One: stop telling me that. And two: I'm not like you, Emmet. I'm not out of control..."
