(Y/N)'s POV

We spent hours sitting in a deserted cave crying our eyes out. I think at one point I did doze off, but not for very long. When I woke up I thought about Percy and the tears came back.

I had known something horrible had happened when I heard the explosion. Annabeth and I were in the hallway just outside of the entrance to the forges, waiting for Percy to show up.

But I think we both knew that Percy wasn't going to appear. Yet we waited anyway. And then the explosion happened.

Annabeth and I ran as fast as we could, but even still a blast of hot air hit us, throwing us off our feet. And I knew then that Percy wasn't coming back to us.

Annabeth was so distraught she wouldn't get up off of the ground. I had to help her up by the shoulders, and when I went back to the entrance to the forges, there was only a stone wall there.

Then the two of us found a dead end cave and just fell to the ground. I knew there was no denying it: Percy was dead. And I had left him there to die. I hadn't even gone down fighting with him.

I hated myself, and I was scared Annabeth would too, but she curled up next to me and cried her eyes out on my shoulder.

There were times when we would stop crying and try to have a conversation. We both knew we had to continue forward, but it was just so hard to find the will to even stand up.

Every once in a while, my mind would drift to when Percy kissed me. And I had kissed back. My feelings were all over the place, and now I would never get a chance to talk to him about it. I'd never get to clarify just how I feel about him.

Then there was Annabeth. I knew she liked Percy, and yet we had a kiss in front of her. Gods, this all sounded like a really cringey teen soap opera.

Aphrodite's words rang in my head from the winter solstice: "I have no idea how your love life will turn out, and that makes it extra exciting for me. I hope it's entertaining, whether it's a tragic tale or not."

I suddenly felt very mad. Was Aphrodite up on Olympus being entertained by all of the stuff that just happened?

Annabeth choked back a sob, which brought me out of my thoughts. Her head was still on my shoulder, and I wondered how long it would take her to realize that she hated me. Not only did I leave Percy behind to die, but the last time she had seen him, I'd kissed her crush.

I must've dozed off again. Then I woke up to a loud growling sound. Annabeth gasped and looked up. I guess she had fallen asleep as well.

"What was that?" I asked, my voice raspy from all of the crying.

The growling started getting louder and more menacing. Whatever this thing was, it had to be huge.

Annabeth and I both shot up to our feet, frightened looks on our faces. I had forgotten that we were still in the Labyrinth, and that there were monsters roaming around.

"The spider," Annabeth whispered, her voice shaky. "We need to get back to...to Hephaestus." She sounded like she was about to cry again, but she controlled herself.

I nodded and reached into my pocket, pulling out the ball that was the mechanical spider. My thoughts turned to Percy suddenly, but I shook them out of my head. I couldn't afford to get emotional right now. Annabeth and I had to survive. Percy had just sacrificed himself for us.
