You stumble outside of your favorite bar on Shem Creek, you were the last person to leave. All the demons you were fighting finally caught up to you. You were still hurt that the love of your life had broke. up with you, you were down about not being where you wanted to be in life, and not to mention, the fact that you just lost your job.
Drowning your sorrows in alcohol seemed like the perfect plan. But now you're stumbling around the island with no way home, mumbling to yourself under the moonlight. Your phone's dead, so you're not sure exactly what time it is, but you know it's after 2 in the morning because all of the bars are closed.
You make it past the dock and are now walking along the side of a dirt road, barely able to see ten feet in front of you because of your blurred vision. You continue walking but halt yourself once you notice the sound of a car slowing down next to you. You're too nervous to even turn your head, afraid that someone may be trying to kidnap you or something. So instead, you face your head toward the ground.
"Yo! Y/n!" You hear the driver of the car shout to you from the window, the voice almost instantly familiar to you. Rafe.
You squint your eyes, trying to get them to focus better but it doesn't work. You hear the car door open and close, followed by the feeling of his hand on your arm.
"Jesus, y/n...you're a mess right now. Did you actually think you could walk home in this kind of shape? Thank god Kelce called me." He speaks with a hint of irritation as he leads you to the passenger side and lifts you into the seat.
"Here" Rafe says as he gets back into the car, handing you an ice cold bottle of water. "I stopped at the gas station, thought you could use this."
Your fingers fumble around on the cap for a few seconds, trying to open the bottle, but with no success.
Rafe rudely snatches the bottle of water out of your hand, taking the cap off before handing it back to you.
"No need to be so fucking rude" you slur your words to the point that it sounds like gibberish, but somehow Rafe still understands it.
"And there was no need for you to get this fucking drunk, y/n. What were you thinking? Honestly?" Rafe's volume makes it seem like he's angry with you, but the tone of his voice is laced with concern.
You cross your arms and look out the window, letting out a huff of annoyance. "Not like it matters anyway" you mumble under your breath.
"I'm sorry? What was that?" Hearing how pissed off Rafe is becoming, you start to feel guilty about being such a brat. He did come all the way out there to pick you up. And he didn't have to.
"I said it's not like it matters anyway, Rafe." There's hateful intent in the way you say his name. Suddenly you feel the car coming to a stop. You know you're not home yet, because he hasn't been driving long enough. You can see a tiny bit better now, and after glancing out the window, you realize Rafe's has just pulled over on the side of the road.
"And what is that supposed to mean exactly?" Rafe turns his head toward you as he speaks.
"I'm saying it's not like you care. I don't even know why you're asking." You huff once more, now getting pissed off that you're stuck in here, probably about to engage in a meaningful conversation right now— which is the last fucking thing you want to do.
"I don't care? Is that really what you think?" Rafe's voice comes out gentle and smooth and almost as if he's offended after hearing you say that.
"No! You didn't care about my feelings when you left me, and you sure as hell don't care about 'em now!" As you yell, you feel your face getting hot and tears forming in your eyes.
Fuck. You hated getting drunk like this, you always get so emotional.
"Y/n. Come on. Please don't cry." Rafe coos as his thumb swipes a tear from your face. "It was never about whether I cared about you or not. I thought it was obvious just how smitten I was with you. I...I left because my habits were getting too bad and I hated putting you through all of the mood swings and aggressive tendencies that the drugs caused." Rafe's sympathy spills out with every word.
"You know...it really fucking hurt when you left me. And it's like ever since you left, everything else in my life has gone downhill." Tears are now rushing down your face as you're not able to hold them back anymore.
"Y/n. It's killing me to see you like this. I never wanted to hurt you. I thought I was helping by leaving you. But the truth is...you haven't left my mind. I've tried to move on, tried to hookup with other girls, but I couldn't even bring myself to do it. You were always there in the back of my mind." Rafe tucks a strand of hair behind your ear, then brings his thumb to your cheek, caressing it.
"So...what are you saying?" You sigh feeling the touch of his hand on your cheek.
"I'm saying...that I was fucking insane to ever let you go. You're the girl of my dreams. And if you'll give me another chance, I swear I'll never let you go again y/n. But for now, let's get you to my house and get you sobered up. I promise I'll still feel the same way in the morning." A cute, light chuckle escapes Rafe's mouth as he finally pulls the car back onto the road.
