"Miss...miss, excuse me, but we're closing soon. You must leave the place."
"Please let me stay here."
"I'm sorry, but I can't. You must leave right now. Besides, it's very cold, if you continue lying on the ground you could get sick. It hasn't stopped snowing and it will continue to snow all night. The temperature will drop more and more. Go home, your family must be worried about you."
"I don't have a home, nor a family," Sam answers, dragging with her voice the vestiges of the crying that has consumed her until now. "My only family is here and the only thing I have left of them are the names that are engraved on these tombstones. Please let me stay a little longer. I promise I won't move from here."
"That's precisely why I can't allow it. You could freeze to death if you're left at the mercy of the elements."
"And what if that happens?" They would be doing me a favor if my eyes did not discover another dawn. Go away, if I die it is by my decision, no one cares.
—I care —answers the cemetery watchman—, or at least my job. They will fire me if I do not comply with the established schedule. I must close the gates at eight o'clock and for that I need you to be out of here. Please do not force me to call the authorities.
Sam picks up her body, as well as her cries, from the ground and kneeling places a couple of kisses on Richard's name and that of her son.
—Goodbye, I love you. Mom loves you — she says, leaving the caresses of her fingers on the engraved name of her baby.
