June 2018

The roar of airplane engines faded into the background as Wei Ying disembarked from the plane, blending into the steady stream of passengers making their way through the airport. The bustling terminal was a maze of people, carts, and announcements. After navigating through customs and retrieving his luggage, Wei Ying finally spotted his trolley waiting at the designated area. Relief washed over him.

He moved swiftly towards the bench near the restrooms, feeling the pressing need to freshen up. With a quick glance around, he noticed a security guard stationed nearby. Gesturing towards his belongings with a practiced flick of his wrist, Wei Ying hoped the guard would keep an eye on his things.

Minutes later, he emerged from the restroom, feeling refreshed but distracted by a peculiar sense of unease. The guard had changed; now a tall African American man stood where the previous guard had been. Wei Ying didn't think much of it, deciding to grab his backpack and head out.

"Excuse me, Mr. You forgot your baby there."

The security guard's voice cut through the ambient noise, and Wei Ying's heart skipped a beat. He turned to see the man pointing behind him. Confused, Wei Ying followed the guard's gaze and his eyes fell upon a small, blue carrier resting on the floor. Inside, a two-year-old Chinese baby lay peacefully asleep, oblivious to the world.

A white envelope was placed carefully on the baby's stomach. Wei Ying's breath caught in his throat. He moved closer, his steps hesitant. With trembling hands, he picked up the envelope, noticing his own name written in elegant Chinese calligraphy.

Opening it, he read the brief but weighty message:

"Take care of this baby for the time being. His name is A-Yuan, 2 years old."

The words echoed in his mind as he looked down at the slumbering child. The baby's delicate features were framed by a few stray locks of dark hair, his chest rising and falling with each serene breath.

A-Yuan was utterly innocent, wrapped in the tranquility of sleep.

Wei Ying felt a pang of responsibility grip him. The weight of the envelope in his hand seemed to grow heavier with each passing second. The reality of the situation sank in. He could not, in good conscience, leave the child behind. He glanced around, but there was no sign of anyone claiming the baby, no one rushing forward to retrieve what was seemingly lost.

In that moment, a profound realization hit him. This tiny, vulnerable life was now his responsibility. A wave of protective instinct surged within him. He knew, with unwavering certainty, that he could not abandon A-Yuan. He would protect this child from any harm that might come their way.

With a determined nod, Wei Ying carefully lifted A-Yuan from the carrier, the baby's soft weight reassuringly warm against his chest. He settled the infant securely into his arms, feeling a new, profound connection. As he walked away from the airport, the bustling outside seemed to fall away, leaving only the quiet resolve of a new father in its wake.

In the blink of an eye, the carefree days of his youth were replaced by the solemn duty of parenthood. As Wei Ying stepped into the unknown future, he carried not just his backpack but a new role-one he was committed to with all his heart. The journey ahead was uncertain, but he vowed to face it with the fierce protection and unconditional love that A-Yuan deserved.
