Blake

"Describe to me again what happened," Chief Applegate told them with her arms wrapped across her chest.

Blake and Quinn exchanged looks.

Blake could almost feel her anger fuming out from her pores like he could make heat. It wasn't their fault the gang got away with the artifacts, but for some reason she seemed to be directing her anger at them.

"Okay," Blake straightened himself in the chair before answering, "Um, I was recording the whole deal from above while in invisible mode. I made sure the camera was on record before I flew down from the crane. Then when I tried to tell you guys to get ready for action, those Mexican guys heard me–I don't know how, because I was like several feet in the air and I was whispering the whole time–and then we fought. Those Mexican guys literally flew at me, so I had to fend them off with telekinesis and fire." He glanced at Quinn. "Blue and I heard the boat's engine, so I told him to go after the boat while I handled the guys. I managed to keep them from jumping on me, but since there were five of them and going in all directions, I couldn't keep tabs on all of them. And then before I knew it, I was zapped."

Applegate softened and nodded. "Which, according to Blue Spekter, came from the leader's gun. We had experts inspect it after he dropped it in the shipyard. There was no indication of an electrical charge in it. In fact, it was a model gun. It didn't fire shit."

Quinn blinked.

"But that's impossible. I saw it with my own eyes."

Applegate looked at him. "Just like how you saw the boat and the crates vanish into thin air?"

Blake breathed heavily to keep his own frustration in check. He knew what anger could do to him and after everything that happened he was on a thin line of earning the trust of the government who still feared him for all the damage he'd caused. If only he could...

Stop it, Blake. You're not doing it anymore.

He shut his eyes to calm his irritation before it could turn on his heating power and accidentally incinerate the office. He pictured a nice and quiet place where he was at peace. Every burden in the world washed away from his shoulders. With a slow sigh, he slowly opened his eyes to meet the chief's staggering glare.

"I know I screwed up," he admitted, "I'm sorry."

Applegate sighed. Her shoulders relaxed a bit.

"No, it's not your fault," she said. "Being in law enforcement may not be the same as being a superhero, but they both come with one lecture about this kind of situation: the unexpected happens."

"How did they do it?" Quinn asked the million-dollar question. "The flying, the fast running, the disappearing." He turned to Blake. "Did your source tell you anything?"

Blake shook his head.

"He didn't say a thing. Then again, he didn't know they were smuggling exotic artifacts from foreign countries. I doubt he knew about what they could do either."

She nodded. She finally loosened her arms and rested them on top of the armrests on her chair. "At least we cuffed the Akimuras. We should be able to extract some information from them."

"The Akimuras?"

"The Asian gang," she clarified. "Turns out they've been on the database for some time. We caught them trying to escape while you two were busy and had to incapacitate them first. That's why we didn't arrive until after."

"Yeah, but two of them still got away," Quinn said. "So, the question remains: how did they have powers?"

"The Order? Maybe Nightmare recruited them. Wouldn't be the first time we dealt with his superhuman evil goons."
