Quinn
Quinn arrived at the airport with his dads and met up with Keegan's family in plenty of time. After a short lunch, everyone checked in and found the departing gate twenty minutes early. What transpired the other night still nagged at Quinn. He stepped away to call Ana María Garcia.
"What's going on?" she answered on the third ring.
Quinn gave her the short version of the story, because they had less than twenty minutes. He waited for her to say something after he finished. All he could hear was the subtle sound of static electricity on his phone. He peered over his shoulder at the screen to check the plane's boarding time.
"Now that's something I've never heard of," Ana María finally said through the line.
Quinn widened his eyes.
"Even you don't know about this?" he asked. "Haven't you ever heard of such things in your sixty years?"
"Honey, I've spent much of that time avoiding discovery and exploring the world," she retorted. "Other than the Order, I've never much paid attention to anything else. This is the first I've heard of since you and Blake."
He breathed down the frustration building in his chest.
"I'm sorry. I guess I was just hoping that you would know what we're dealing with."
"I hear your frustration. The fact that these gangs have people who display superpowers is definitely concerning."
Quinn looked to the gate where his and Keegan's families will be boarding. There was no change yet. "Is it possible that Victor Kraze might've infused more people with orgone energy?"
"I suppose it could be. It is his style to do such a thing. Though it would take ages to build a machine big enough to do such a task. Also, I've never met a superhuman who could elongate fangs. So, either it's orgone or we're dealing with the supernatural here."
Quinn snorted. Yeah, right, he thought.
There's no such thing as the supernatural. He became painfully convinced of that when he failed to find fairies in the woods. According to children books he read back in third grade, they supposedly came out to frolic during midsummer and one could catch them in visible form with a stone ring. Which didn't work at all.
"I'll have some of my friends look into this," said Ana María. "What're the gangs' names again?"
Quinn saw the gate screen had shifted to 'boarding' as he told her the names. Keegan walked past the line that was beginning to form and hurried toward him.
"Sorry, I hafta go, call ya later." He hung up, pocketed the phone in his pocket and walked back toward Keegan.
He looked at him with concern.
"Everything okay?" he asked.
Quinn nodded.
"Yeah, just had to make a phone call to tie some things up."
Keegan smiled his charming smile that always sent butterflies to Quinn's stomach. He fought to concentrate on his breathing to stop the lights above from flickering. He held out his hand.
"Come on, mighty hero," he said, "It's time for our little getaway trip."
Quinn snickered. He took Keegan's hand and followed toward the line of passengers who were boarding the flight for Texas.
"I can't wait."
