Blake
Everyone was dismissed from the meeting. Applegate immediately ordered Helion to fly his butt downtown and check out the situation. He wasted no time speeding out of the facility and flying off at bullet speed. He flew so fast that the sound barrier broke in his wake.
Catamount caught up to him in no time, and they flew shoulder to shoulder in silence. They made it to Oak Terrace where police cruisers stood parked underneath the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge. Yellow tapes were tied around areas to keep onlookers out. Helion saw two large body bags inside the restricted area before landing with Catamount. A few passersby cheered at the sight of the two superheroes while the rest of them stepped aside to make way. Officer Parkinson stepped out of the banner zone to approach them.
"Good thing you guys are here," he said with relief. "You've gotta see this."
The superheroes followed him into the zone to where several other officers were busy either interviewing witnesses or collecting clues around the crime scene. There were two bodies covered in black plastic bag.
"Who found the bodies?" Catamount asked.
"A man living nearby. He was jogging to the bridge when he saw them lying on the ground."
"Define weird," Helion said.
Officer Parkinson knelt down and lifted one of the covers to reveal a young female body. Helion's stomach churned at the sight of a dead body.
Oh God, no, don't throw up.
It took every ounce of self-control in his bones to keep the breakfast from making its way up his windpipe. It was not a pleasant feeling. He peered at Catamount, who looked completely unfazed by the sight of a dead woman with pale skin and slashed wounds on the side of her neck. Parkinson proceeded to show them the other corpse; it was an adult Latino male with the same wound on his neck. Helion recognized him as a regular customer at Kaffee Vonsolln. He fought to keep from vomiting.
"Victims were attacked viciously, but they didn't die from the wounds, rather they were... drained of blood. It seems like someone stuck something really sharp into their necks and spilled their blood, but we didn't find any sort of blood trail in the area." He exhaled uneasily. "I don't wanna believe this. It's insane that I'm about to say it, but after everything that happened this past year..." Trailing off, he went silent for a moment. "The coroner and I suspect whoever did this might've been... a..."
"Vampire?"
He nodded exasperatedly.
I get how you feel, dude.
"What's the story here? Do we know who they are?" Catamount asked in a calm, CSI voice to sway the conversation back to the victims.
Parkinson picked up a transparent plastic bag with the victims' belongings stored inside. He fished out two ID cards and a driving license. "Lori DiMarco and Bill Delgado."
The dread that loomed over him grew tenfold.
I knew it was him.
Helion told them about the male victim's regular visits to the café. Chief Applegate arrived with Tsang and Tallman. After they were filled in on the details, Tallman went to check the body. He sniffed quietly. Tsang stood still like a statue and breathed a bit unevenly. Helion checked her out with confusion. At the same time a chill washed over him.
What the hell?
Tsang drew in a frightened breath as she looked ahead. Helion followed her glance. Right there, next to Agent Tallman, two human-sized figures materialized with identical features to the two victims. They were like perfect copies, right down to the open wounds on the side of their necks and paper white complexions.
