Nickolai
The crack of laughter that echoed through the space, had me tilting my gaze towards the intruder.
Valentin.
With twisted humorous eyes and a stroll that had him looking like a predator as he stalked toward me, I knew that his stupid antics would be focused on me. To be honest, he had good reason to.
"Are you doing homework?" He laughed again when my eyes slid into a glare.
Yes, I was indeed marking an assignment I had given the students the previous week. If I were to play teacher, I had to do a good job. Losing had never been an option for me.
One thing I knew V would never challenge me with.
I had no say in how he ran our family's companies and he had no say in how I ran mine. We'd seek help from each other when needed.
"Yes," I replied tonelessly before I turned back to completing the sentence I had been in the middle of.
I couldn't remember the names of any of them, and I didn't care per say. None of them had been worthy for me to remember their name.
That didn't mean their work wasn't up to date and strangely smart or humorous, it just meant that I was playing the cover I was meant to play and nothing more.
A hardworking teacher during the day and a killer during the night.
Perfect balance I would say.
"I have to play the part," I frowned as my eyes scanned the next sentence of the student, purposefully ignoring my brother as he casually unbuttoned his suit jacket and took a seat in the chair across of me. Mention how he leaned back and crossed his leg over the other. That position meant he was going to be here a while. I didn't want him in my space. "You know... since you have the real teacher stuffed somewhere."
His chuckle was dark and came right from his belly. I wasn't that funny. "Of course Mr Black." His teasing had never fooled me before and it wouldn't now. His dark gaze scanned the papers spread out between us. "Why didn't you just ask Blaylock to do it for you? He's a puppy."
I almost scoffed. Not because of how casually he would want me to wipe this off on somebody else, but the fact that he had mentioned Blaylock. The very man that had indeed offered not too long ago when he stepped into my office and saw what I had been busy with. It seemed that everybody wanted me to focus on why we were really here. And not get distracted with side quests.
"He's not a dog, V," I reminded and my eyes met his. Just endless pools of darkness that surely mirrored mine. "I'm the only one that would and could fully understand what these kids as writing as I am the one teaching them."
His lips twitched with a smirk. "Right."
When that sick and twisted look entered his eyes, I knew he was about to taunt me. After all, that is why he was here right now. He had nothing better to do than irritate me. He even managed to do so as adults.
"You're a good teacher. I'd say eight out of ten. You know... two points deducted because of your carnal desires for a teenager."
Impending silence followed. So silent that my fist clenching could be heard. So could be the lowly scream of plastic before it snapped inside my palm. V's eyes flittered over to the now broken stationary before they met mine. No fear of course. Just a younger brother pushing buttons that he had created.
"Have you read her paper yet?" He continued, this time grinning like a fucking maniac.
My glare never faltered, wishing I could beat his grinning face to a fucking bloody pulp. I had more to worry about his blood all over my papers though. I would have to deal with that psychopath he was married to. She would make my life miserable for the next couple of days. Mystery I couldn't afford to feel now.
