It was the summer of eighth grade when we met. The July day was hot and sticky and the sun was shining brightly. We were having a neighborhood party for 4th of July and he had just moved here from Texas.
He was sitting alone while I was listening to my mom talk to some of her friends.
"Hey, Kellie, go to talk to the new boy. His name is Walker I think." My mom said.
"Ok." I said not really loving the idea of having to socialize.
I walked over to the boy who was sitting on a bright blue lawn chair.
"Hi," is said, "my name is Kellie."
"Hey, I'm Walker. I just moved here."
"Oh cool. How do you like Kansas so far?"
"Eh, it's ok," he said shrugging, "there's not much to do here. Everyone is really nice though."
"Yeah there really isn't much to do here." I agreed.
"What's your number?" He asked as he handed me his phone. "You're the only person I've met so far so if I bombard you with texts I'm sorry." He said grinning.
"It's fine." I replied laughing and I handed him back his iPhone.
"Hey kids." My dad said as he walked up to us. "The burgers and hot dogs are ready if you guys want to go ahead and get in line before they all stampede."
"Alright thanks." I said as I started walking towards a picnic table filled with summer-y foods. Walker trailed behind and soon enough we both had plates filled with hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and desserts.
I sat down under an oak tree and Walker followed me.
"Wow, this is great!" He aid as he took a gigantic bite out of his cheeseburger filled with tomato, ketchup, lettuce, and of course cheese.
"I know." I said in between bites. It really was great, my dad was known around the town for this delicious, flavorful burger.
"So how long have you lived here?" Walker asked.
"As long as I can remember. I was born in a town about 20 minutes away and we lived there for about two years before we moved here."
"Ohh so this is your house?"
"Yep." I said eating a potato chip. "So you're from Texas?" I asked him, trying to carry on the conversation. The truth was, I didn't have many friends and a chance at a new friend was great.
"Yeah at least that's where I've lived for the past two years. My dad is in the military so we have moved a lot. We move at least every two years. I've lived in 6 different states, 9 different cities, and we even lived in Europe for half a year."
"Wow, that's pretty cool." I said, always loving the sound of a new adventure and travels.
"I guess. It's just hard moving all of the time. I've never had a real best friend ya know?"
"Yeah I completely understand." I understood what not having a best friend was like. I was always kind
of a loner but I felt like Walker could change that.

The next day, I was laying in bed reading the Harry Potter series for the billionth time. It was about 9:30 a.m. and I heard my phone beep on my nightstand. I picked it up and I saw an unknown number texting.
Hey. The text read.Hi, who is this?
It's Walker from down the street.
Ohh hi. To be honest, I was surprised that Walker was texting me. Not many people texted me, so this was a nice surprise.
So what are you doing? The next text from Walker read.
Nothing much, just re-reading Harry Potter
Really?! I love those books I've read them at least 50 times.
Same! So what are you doing? I asked.
Just taking a break from unpacking. We are trying to get our house in order.
Ohh that's cool. I hope the unpacking goes well. I replied.
Thanks!
No problem.
Would you mind showing me around the neighborhood tomorrow? My mom really wants me to meet some kids my age but I don't want to go alone...
Sure, that sounds like fun. Now I was in complete disbelief. Walker asked me to do something with him! This was really the first thing I've been invited to do this summer by someone other than family.
Ok, thanks. How about I meet you at your house tomorrow at noon?
That's good with me. I typed back.
Ok, see you then! I have to go unpack some more bye.
Bye, see you tomorrow.
See you tomorrow. He replied, ending the conversation.
As I picked up my book and started reading about the adventures at Hogwarts again, my mind kept wondering to Walker. He was so nice to me. He seemed like he would be a great friend. I looked forward to seeing him tomorrow because other than the Fourth of July party, I hadn't really done anything social this summer. Unless you consider spending time with fictional characters while reading a book as social.
I sighed as I sunk back into my book and anxiously waited for tomorrow to arrive.
